Season Ends For Wilmot Speedway
Wilmot Speedway, October 2, 2005 - Ryan Stalter (Ashippun, WI), Jeff Graf
(Milwaukee, WI) and Jason Gaudynski (Milwaukee, WI) all had the opportunity to
be crowned champion of the Sportsman division for 2005 going into the action
Saturday night. Stalter held a lead of 9 points over Graf and just 20
points over Gaudynski when the feature started. Roger Lee (Windlake, WI)
making his first visit to the Wilmot Speedway grabbed the lead at the drop of
the green as he powered past the first three cars. Don Sorce Jr. (West
Allis, WI) moved around Bobby "The Colonel" Parker (South Milwaukee,
WI) on lap three and was followed by Tommy Moore (Muskego, WI) dropping Parker
to fourth. The event would run start to finish with no caution flags and
Lee held off Sorce for the win. The only question was whether Stalter
would finish well enough to pick up the championship. Graf would get by
Stalter with just two laps remaining but the points didn't add up to be enough
to beat Stalter. Even finishing 10th in the field, Stalter picked up his
first Sportsman championship.
In the Non-winged sprint feature, Don Fahl started on the pole and wasted no
time establishing himself as the one to beat. Seven laps into the event,
Joe Wipperfurth, while running third, spun around in turn two bringing out the
caution flag and ending his hopes of winning the race. Scott Semmelmann
and Alex Coonan worked together to get past Tim Vandervere and take over the
second and third positions on lap nine. One lap later, Kevin Hinich
dropped Vandervere one more spot. Alex Pettas brought out the final
caution of the event when he went around on lap 11. On the restart,
Coonan and Semmelmann battled side by side for a lap before Coonan was able to
take hold of the second position. Fahl held on for the win with Coonan
finishing in the first runner-up spot.
The Modified division continued their season long battle with getting a
feature event started. On the opening lap, David Hochschild (Muskego,
WI) had problems and brought out the yellow. On the restart, Brian
Crapser (Brookfield, WI) spun coming out of turn four bringing out the yellow
again. The field got to turn two on the restart before Lee Tibbitts
(Hebron, IL), Jason Hyerdall and the J95 car got together and brought out the
yellow again. When the yellow was displayed on lap eight, management
decided to yellow-checker the event due to time constraints. Jim Zdroik
(Big Bend, WI) picked up the win after starting on the pole. Roy
Morrison and Jeff Bodendorfer, Jr. (Waterford, WI) finished second and third
respectively.
By picking up a feature win, Brian Ramstack (West Bend, WI) also picked up a
season long championship as a mini-sprint driver. Going into Saturday's
action, Ramstack was trailing Ron Brannum for the title. Brannum flipped
his car at the start of the heat race and was transported to a local hospital
for observation leaving the door open for Ramstack. Terry Ahern held the
early lead starting from the pole position but Randy Reed (Spring Grove, IL)
passed him on lap two. Ramstack worked his way around Reed on the next
lap and started pulling away from the field. Dwayne Williford coasted to
a stop at the end of the front stretch bring out the yellow a few laps later
bunching up the field. Jessica Brannum (McHenry, IL) brought out the red
as she became the second Brannum to flip her car as she made contact with Reed
exiting turn two. She was uninjured but was done for the night.
Ramstack was never challenged for the win and moved past Brannum in the points
standing picking up the title of champion.
Bruce Laubinger was trying to put an exclamation point on his championship
season by winning the final Street Stock feature. However, Jim
Vandervere had something to say about it before the night was over.
Vandervere jumped out to an early lead from his outside front row starting
position followed by Kevin Mueller (Camp Lake, WI) and Laubinger.
Laubinger moved past Mueller on lap three and took off after Vandervere.
Mueller wouldn't give up the spot so easily and eventually caught Laubinger on
lap nine. The two would battle for the next three laps until lapped
traffic came into play and Laubinger was able to put some distance between
himself and Mueller. Out front, Vandervere took advantage to the two
cars battling behind him to build up a lead and never looked back.
Laubinger finished the season as the Champion for the Street Stock division.
