Sexton Wins Thriller At Wilmot

Wilmot Speedway, September 10, 2005 - Tommy Sexton (Antioch, IL) held off Don Durham (Sturtevant, WI) in a thriller of a WOS 410 Sprint feature Saturday night at the Wilmot Speedway.  Scott Lenz took an early lead beating Don Durham to the start-finish line on lap one.  Patrick Haynes went around on lap three bringing out the first yellow with the top five being Lenz, Durham, Sexton, Kurt Winker and Tim Vandervere.  Once the race was restarted, the leaders quickly caught the back end of the field and resulted in some exciting racing.  Going into turn three in fourth place on lap nine, Winker made contact with another car and went up and over ending up on the outside retaining wall.  Winker was uninjured but done for the night.

The next 11 laps would be some of the most exciting racing fans had seen at Wilmot in 2005.  Several times the top three cars, Lenz, Durham and Sexton would be three wide through the corners with the lead changing hands on laps 13, 14 and 15.  Lenz began to fade on lap 16 and would end up with a sixth place finish.  Up front, the battle raged on between Sexton and Durham.  Jim Lukey rolled on to his side on lap 18 setting up a two lap shootout.  Just as Durham was moving past Sexton on the last lap, Mark Wernes Jr. (Mukwonago, WI) and Bill Waite Jr. got together forcing the yellow to come out.  Durham had one more opportunity to get try and get past Sexton using the inside line coming out of turn four but would fall about a foot short of the win.  Troy Hepfner, Darrell Dodd (Beach Park, IL) and Dave Moulis (McHenry, IL) rounded out the top five.

In the Modified feature, Brian Crapser (Brookfield, WI) started on the pole but had trouble getting up to speed at the start and had already faded several places when Jasen Jensen spun bringing out the yellow.  The race was restarted from the top and Crapser was able to hold on to the top spot as the field completed lap one.  Jim Morrison (Antioch, IL), last week's feature winner, quickly established himself as the car on the move.  Starting 11th, Morrison would take over third place on lap three and second on lap four.  2005 points champion Mike Bodendorfer dropped Larry Surletta a position on lap five and set off after Lee Tibbetts (Hebron, IL) who was running third.  Tibbetts and Morrison would battle back and forth on laps six and seven swapping positions before Morrison took a solid hold on the position.  Lap nine would have Morrison taking control of the event from Crapser and Mike Simons (Genoa City, WI) taking over sixth from Surletta.  Tibbetts and Bodendorfer would also work their way past Crapser on lap 12 dropping Crapser to his fourth place finishing position.  Morrison would go on to the win with Tibbetts and Bodendorfer finishing second and third respectively.

Gary Foster (Kenosha, WI) jumped out to an early lead in the Street Stock feature followed by Nenny Netzel (Bristol, WI) and Todd Hensley (Twin Lakes, WI).  Unfortunately for Foster, mechanical problems surfaced on lap three and the lead was inherited by Netzel.  Nick Simons, driving for Bruce Laubinger, spun his number 18 in turn two and was hit by Frank Paul (Kewaunee, WI) on lap six.  The contact would damage the radiator on Simons car but he would return to the event before the drop of the green for the restart.  Simons picked off cars in front of him and was already up to third place on lap eight and second on lap nine.  Simons caught the leader, Netzel, on lap 12 and they would battle side by side for two laps before Simons took over on lap 14.  Simons went on to take the checkered flag first and Netzel second.  In victory lane, Simons asked the Junior Fan of the Night, Brandon Paul, to come down for pictures and let Paul take the first-place trophy home with him.

The action continues next Saturday night as the MSA Sprints come to Wilmot and are joined by the IMCA Modifieds and Street Stocks.  For more information contact the track office at 262-279-3892.
