Kristan Wins In 410 Sprints Return To Wilmot
Wilmot Speedway, August 27, 2005 - Darrell Dodd looked like the one to beat as
the 410 Sprints made their return to the Wilmot Speedway for the first time in
2005. Dodd jumped to the top position on lap one just as the yellow came
out for Tommy Sexton (Antioch, IL). The lineup went back to the original
lineup but Dodd did it again and took the lead. Rick Kelsey (West Allis,
WI) had worked his way up to third by lap three but was already half a
straightaway behind Dodd. As Kelsey moved to the second spot, Brian
Kristan (Zion, IL) was making his way up through traffic and took over third
by the end of lap 6. Dodd looked like he was on his way to a clean sweep
when he unexpectedly spun his number 11 coming out of turn two bringing out
the yellow on lap 16. Kelsey and Kristan were set to battle it out for a
four lap shootout with Kelsey holding the lead on lap 17. Jeff Ferkin
(Pleasant Prairie, WI) spun on the frontstretch just as Kelsey went around on
lap 18 relegating both to the rear of the field for the green, white, checker
finish. Kristan took the checkered flag in front of Kevin Hinich who
finished in the runner-up spot.
Kris Techert (Kenosha, WI) and Jason Jensen led the field of modifieds to the
line for their feature but not all the cars completed lap number one as Jeff
Bodendorfer, Jr. (Waterford, WI) caused a yellow in turn three collecting the
29 of Dave Holden (Pleasant Prairie, WI) and his brother Mike Bodendorfer
(Muskego, WI). Jimmy Muth Jr (Greenfield, WI) took the opportunity on
the restart to jump from his inside row two starting position to the
lead. Mike Conn (Big Bend, WI) followed Muth to the front and settled
into the second spot. Jim Morrison (Antioch, IL) was the man on the move
and passed Conn and Muth to take control on lap four. Scott Kuxhouse who
had earlier won his heat race used the inside line to take over the third
position on lap three getting by Conn. Two laps later, Mike Sullivan
(Trevor, WI), worked his way past Morrison who had fallen to second behind
Muth dropping Morrison to third. Sullivan beat Muth to the line on lap
seven and never looked back. Kuxhouse appeared to have a mechanical
problem on lap eight falling several spots before getting back up to
speed. Lap nine saw an incident in turn one in which Mike Bodendorfer
ended up on the outside concrete retaining wall. Once the car was back
on solid ground, Bodendorfer quickly went to the pits but was able to return
to the speedway before the green flag dropped and staying on the lead
lap. The last 11 laps saw a ferocious battle between Muth, Morrison,
Conn and eventually Mike Bodendorfer who worked his way back up through the
field. Sullivan made it three for three in the Triple Crown nights with
Muth and Morrison finishing second and third respectively.
Mark Lewis (Colgate, WI) was hoping his luck would change in the Sportsman
division. The last two features, Lewis had commanding leads only to have
mechanical problems send him to the pits. Saturday night, his luck
changed. Lewis had an early battle with Brian Blake for the lead
with Blake getting the preferred spot. Jeff Graf (Milwaukee, WI), the
last feature winner, worked his way past Lewis and Blake on lap three and
gaining the lead much to the delight of his fan club. Lewis managed to
make his way past Blake and was running in the second spot on lap six.
Graf relinquished the lead to Lewis on lap nine and Lewis was never challenged
the rest of the way. The only question the rest of the event was how far
Bobby "The Colonel" Parker (South Milwaukee, WI) would move
up. He was involved in a heated battle with Blake on lap 15 when Blake
went into turn one too hard and took out Parker. Parker was given his
spot back while Blake was sent to the rear of the field for the restart.
Parker would move up one more position and finish in the second spot with Graf
finishing third. Ryan Stalter came out of the event still holding the
lead in the championship.
In the Street Stock division, Jim Vandervere looked to return to victory
circle for the first time since June 25. It didn't look so good for him
at the start as points leader Bruce Laubinger jumped to the front on lap
one. Vandervere, starting eighth in the event, was flying through the
field and was up to second by lap three and got past Laubinger on lap
seven. As the field completed lap nine, Kenny Netzel (Bristol, WI) was
up to third and Steve Kennedy was running fourth. Gary Foster (Kenosha,
WI) brought out the yellow on lap 10 as he slowed on the frontstretch with
smoke billowing from the engine compartment. Laubinger would spin his
car in turn four at the end of the event dropping him from second all the way
back to seventh.
