Conn, Vandevere And Brannum Win In Week 2 At Wilmot
Wilmot Speedway, May 28, 2005 - Jimmy Muth Jr. grabbed an early lead from his
outside front row starting spot but a mechanical problem on lap 3 forced him
to the pits. Lee Tibbetts made a move on the inside looking for the lead
on lap 9 when he hit the inside tire and rolled his automobile. Tibbetts
was fine but was done for the evening. Last week's feature winner, Jim
Morrisson, worked his way to second by lap 10 and took over the top spot on
the restart. Mike Conn had been steadily moving towards the front and
took over the fourth spot on lap 13 when the yellow came out again, this time
for Jeff Bodendorfer, Mike Sullivan and Morrisson, all who were running in the
top 5. B.G. Wood took the lead briefly but ran out of fuel giving the
lead back to Conn. When the yellow came out again on lap 15, the race
was checkered giving the win to Conn. Conn, during the victory
celebration, gave his first-place trophy to the Junior Fan of the Week, Evan
Peters.
In the Street Stock division, last year's champion Todd Hensley took the lead
from John Fletcher on lap 4. The caution flag was displayed for the
first time on lap 10 for Billy Combs who had slowed to a halt coming out of
turn 2. Hensley took his car to the pits and was taken out of
contention. Bruce Laubinger and Jim Vandevere broke away from the rest
of the pack and put on an exciting show for the fans as they battled for the
rest of the event. Laubinger, trying to catch Vandever, spun out on lap
18 bringing out the final caution. The green, white, checker finish
proved to be a mere formality for Vandever who made it two feature victories
in two attempts in 2005.
Ron Brannum took the lead with a brilliant move to the inside coming out of
turn 4 on lap 3 of the Mini-Sprints feature and never looked back to take the
checkered flag first.
