Semmelmann, Bodendorfer, Morton, Brannum Win Wilmot Season Finale
Local Promotion's Wilmot Speedway
By Bill Mews
(Wilmot, WI, October 09, 2004) Scott Semmelmann (Brookfield, WI) won the
season finale for the Midwest Sprintcar Association at the Wilmot Speedway
Saturday night, but Doug Schenk (Madison, WI) won the season long
championship. Semmelmann, starting in the second row, jumped out to the
point at the drop of the green. Pole-sitter Johnny Fahl (Brown Deer, WI)
and Phil Wade (Kenosha, WI) caused the first yellow with a spin in turn four
on lap two. On the restart, Al Schlafer (Sussex, WI) took a wild ride
down the backstretch flipping end over end coming to a rest at the entrance to
turn three. Al was uninjured and used his backup car in the Race of
Champions later in the evening.
Scott Sippel (Elkhart Lake, WI) worked his way up to second by lap 11.
Debris on lap 14 brought out the yellow again and gave Semmelmann clean track
in front of him. Lapped cars occupied row two giving Semmelmann a bit of
a buffer between himself and the second and third running cars. Fast
qualifier Lance Fassbender (Burnett, WI) took over third place on lap 18 and
things settled down before Rob Pribnow (Lomira, WI) flipped on the backstretch
on lap 19. Once the event got restarted, Semmelmann never looked back
and picked up his first Feature victory at Wilmot. Sippel finished a
solid second with Fassbender third.
David O'Neal (Milwaukee, WI) won the annual Race of Champions beating out the
other 2004 Wilmot Feature winners in the MSA division.
The IMCA Modified season finale got off to a rough start with a lap one
incident involving Eric Ade, Brad McGuire, Tony McGuire and Tom McKinney
(Rolling Meadows, IL). On the restart, the 1s of Scott Shultis ended up
against the tire barrier in turn one. Track officials ruled that Shultis
had help from Jeff Bodendorfer (Waterford, WI) and put both cars to the
rear. Chuck Ostergaard and Tom Brown got together on lap seven bringing
out the yellow again. Pole-sitter Lee Tibbitts (Hebron, IL) exited to
the pits during the caution with mechanical problems ending his night.
Due to time constraints, the event was called on lap eight when the yellow
came out again for debris giving the win to Mike Bodendorfer (Muskego, WI).
In the Paint-to-Pass Feature for the Street Stock division, Kelly Kufke was
trying to be the first female feature winner in 2004 at Wilmot Speedway.
She had the lead going into the final lap but got together with Tim Morton
coming out of turn two and rolled her car halfway down the backstretch ending
up upside down. Kelly was a little shaken but uninjured. Tim
Morton was credited with the win with Billy Combs (Bloomfield, WI) finishing
second.
Ron Brannum (Barrington, IL) took an early lead in the Mini-Sprint Feature but
Kevin Olson (Rockford, IL) started closing the gap after passing Randy Reed
(Spring Grove, IL) on lap five. Olson looked as if he would mount a
challenge for the lead when mechanical problems forced him to the pits on lap
10. Brannum went on for the easy victory.
Come on out to the Wilmot Speedway October 23 and 24 for the 2nd Annual Swap
