Wilmot Street Stock Champ Hensley
Local Promotion's Wilmot Speedway
By Bill Mews
(Wilmot, WI, September 25, 2004) Todd Hensley (Twin Lakes, WI) took home
the 2004 Wilmot Speedway Street Stock Championship Saturday night. Even
a last place finish in the feature event wasn't enough to thwart his efforts
for the season long honor. Jim Vandevere took the lead at the drop of
the green and let the rest of the field battle it out behind him. Nickie
Sullivan (Trevor, WI) was running second on lap three when she lost the left
rear shock bringing out a yellow and putting her to the tail end of the
field. The yellow came out again on lap seven for an incident between
Hensley and Bruce Laubinger. Laubinger worked his way back to the front
and finished second with Sullivan and Hensley finishing third and fourth
respectively. Unfortunately for Sullivan and Hensley, problems were
found with their cars during the post-race inspection and both were moved to
the end of the field moving Kelly Kufke to third and Kevin Mueller to fourth.
Mike Sullivan (Trevor, WI) beat out the rest of a limited field of IMCA
Modifieds in their feature event after also collecting a heat race win.
Sullivan took the green from his outside first row position and by the end of
lap one had moved in front of pole sitter Mike Conn (Big Bend, WI).
Sullivan never looked back and picked up the win with Conn finishing
second. Nick Simons (Genoa City, WI) took home third place honors and
Lee Tibbitts (Hebron, IL) moved up four spots to finish fourth.
Brian Ramstack (Mukwonago, WI) picked up another Wilmot Feature win in the
Mini-Sprint division. John Draper (Racine, WI) took an early but
short-lived lead at the start but Ramstack powered past him on lap 5 to take
the lead for good. Ron Brannum (Barrington, IL) took over the second
position on lap 6 and Kevin Olson was up six positions to third by lap
11. Ramstack held on for the win, Brannum took second and Olson finished
third in his first visit to the Wilmot Speedway.
John Fahl (Brown Deer, WI) was able to hold off the hard charging of Danny
Schlafer (Sussex, WI) to win his first Midwest Sprintcar Association career
Feature. Front row starters Fahl and Scott Sippel (Elkart Lake, WI)
traded spots for the lead before Fahl was able to put some distance on the
field. With five circuits complete, eighth starting Doug Schenck (Madison, WI)
had worked his way forward and was battling with Sippel for the second spot,
Schenck was able to slip past Sippel. Lap eight had Schenck charging hard on
Fahl out of turn four when wheel to wheel contact between Fahl and Schenck
broke the front axle on Schenck's car bringing out the yellow flag. As the
field dodged the Schenck car, Scott Conger (Eagle, WI) was left with no where
to go and was tipped over on to his wing, Conger was not injured.
The restart had Sippel and Scott Semmelmann (Brookfield, WI) chasing after
Fahl, and half way through the race Schlafer battled past Semmelmann for the
third spot. The last half of the race became a shootout as Sippel and Schlafer
battled for the second spot, with Schlafer charging repeatedly on Fahl in
exciting action. Fahl was able to fend off the repeated charges of Schalfer to
pick up the checker, Schlafer crossed the line second. Finishing third was
Sippel, Chris Wiser (Neosho, WI) held on to fourth and Robbie Pribnow (Lomira,
WI) advanced to finish fifth.
