Sorce and Marshall Wilmot Champions
Local Promotion's Wilmot Speedway
By Bill Mews
(Wilmot, WI, September 18, 2004) Don Sorce Jr. (West Allis, WI) and
Larry Marshall became Wilmot Speedway 2004 Champions in their respective
divisions Saturday night. Don Sorce went out in style picking up a
feature victory in the Sportsman ranks.
The win for Sorce was his third championship in a row with the first two
coming at the Hales Corner's Speedway in 2002 and 2003.
Tommy Moore (Muskego, WI) wasted no time moving to the front from his outside
row three position and took the top spot on lap number three of the Bill Mews
RE/MAX Realty 100 Sportsman Triple Crown Round 3 feature. Following
Moore to the front, Sorce took over the second spot and Dave Gorny (West
Allis, WI) on lap four. Sorce powered past Moore on lap seven and Pat
Heaney made it a four car breakaway taking over fourth. Ross Stalter
(Hubertus, WI) brought out the first yellow of the race on lap 10 when he spun
in turn two. The experienced Heaney passed the second year driver Moore
on lap 13 taking over the third position. Stalter was running the
outside line on lap 20 when Gorny and Heaney were coming out of turn number
four and about to pass the slower Stalter. Gorny had to back off the
throttle to avoid hitting Stalter and that allowed Heaney to take over the
second spot. Jeff Graf (Milwaukee, WI) brought out the final yellow on
lap 23 setting up a 7 lap shootout.
Heaney was able to make his way past Sorce on lap 28 but Sorce made a
brilliant move on the white flag lap past Heaney and took the win at the
line. Heaney finished second and Gorny third. With Gorny's third
place finish, he took home first place honors in the Triple Crown with Heaney
second, Sorce third and Moore fourth.
In the Modified A Main, Mike Conn (Big Bend, WI) jumped to the point at the
drop of the green. Jim Morrison (Antioch, IL) was the car on the move
and had moved up seven positions by lap 10 taking over the third spot.
Debris in turn three brought out the first yellow on lap seven bunching up the
field. Morrison was able to get by Conn on lap 17 to take over first
place with Lee Tibbitts (Hebron, IL) moving up to second on lap 18.
After a yellow on lap 19, Tibbitts got a flat tire on the restart bringing out
the yellow again and sending Tibbitts to the pits. Tibbitts crew was
able to get the tire replaced in time for the restart but his bad luck
continued on lap 20 when he was involved in an incident with Dave Holden
(Pleasant Prairie, WI) and Mike Watson. The field got two more laps in
before Tibbitts, Mike Bodendorfer (Muskego, WI) and Dan Hopkins got together
in turn two. Jay Crichton lost his tire on lap 24 and the event was
yellow-checkered (one lap short of completion) due to time constraints.
Morrison picked up his fifth feature victory in 2004 with Jeff Bodendorfer
(Waterford, WI), Ty Webster, Surletta and Tibbitts rounding out the top five.
Doug Schenck (Madison, WI) took the win in a very exciting Midwest Sprint Car
Association Feature and moved closer to the MSA Championship for the 2004
season. Schenck used a last lap pass to take the win after battling with
runner up Danny Schlafer (Sussex, WI) for a good portion of the event.
Kurt Winker (Pleasant Prairie, WI) finished third.
Jim Vandervere won his fourth feature in an uneventful Street Stock main
event. Kevin Mueller finished second and Nickie Sullivan (Trevor, WI)
finishing third.
The Mini-Sprint and Street Stock divisions wrap up their championship seasons
next week and will be joined by the MSA 360 Sprints and the IMCA modifieds.
Gates open at 5:00pm with racing at 7:00pm. For more information visit
