Four For Schlafer
Local Promotion's Wilmot Speedway
By Bill Mews

(Wilmot, WI, August 14, 2004)  Danny Schlafer (Sussex, WI) made it four Wilmot Saturdays in a row running off with the Midwest Sprintcar Association Feature win.  After a Shane Wenninger (Kewaskum, WI) yellow at the drop of the green moved up the entire outside row, Schlafer had to work his way past pole-sitter Robbie Pribnow (Lomira, WI).  Schlafer would not be seriously challenged until late in the contest but a hot battle developed for the next several spots.

With five laps in the books, Schlafer had a straight-away margin while Tim Haddy (Lomira, WI) battled for second with Pribnow, Chris Wiser (Neosho, WI) held down the fourth spot, Lance Fassbender (Burnett, WI) had moved up five spots to fifth, and David O'Neal (Milwaukee, WI) had moved up a blazing ten spots running sixth.

A lap eleven yellow erased Schlafer's lead. With the return to action, Fassbender kicked in the after-burner and at the half way point of the 25 lap race had rocketed past Mark Wernes Jr. (West Allis, WI), Wiser, O'Neal, Haddy and Pribnow to the second spot.

In a good clean battle for third, the youngster Pribnow battled for several laps the experienced O'Neal, but with seven laps to go O'Neal took over the spot. The yellow waved for the final time with 19 laps in, again erasing Schlafer's lead and setting the stage for a six lap shootout with Fassbender and O'Neal.

Schlafer would go on to hold off Fassbender to cross the finish line first, Fassbender was second for his best finish of the season. O'Neal took KSE Hard Charger honors advancing thirteen spots from his starting position to finish third. Pribnow made a last lap pass to finish fourth over Wernes.

In the IMCA Modified division, Mike Conn (Big Bend, WI) looked to pick up his fourth feature win, working from the pole.  Conn grabbed the lead at the drop of the green but the field had problems getting the first couple of laps in due to spins on several restarts.  Once they got going, the action was fast and fierce as three-wide was a common sight.  Mike Bodendorfer (Muskego, WI) took the lead on lap 10 after taking the outside line around Conn and Lee Tibbits (Hebron, IL).  Larry Surletta and Mike Sullivan (Trevor, WI) brought out the caution on lap 14 bunching up the field for what turned out to be the final restart.

Danny Mech (Greenfield, WI) had worked his way up to third from his row five starting position and was in the mix for the six lap shootout.  Coming out of turn four on lap 16, Mech was able to use the low groove past Conn and Bodendorfer with the latter two tangling coming down the front stretch and Mech crossing the line first.  Conn ended up parked sideways but Bodendorfer was able to continue on.  Due to time constraints, the yellow-checkered was displayed and the win given to Bodendorfer as he was the leader on the last green flag lap.

Don Sorce Jr. (West Allis, WI) picked up his third feature victory of the 2004 season in the Sportsman division.  Sorce worked his way past Jeff Graf (Milwaukee, WI) on lap five and was pulling away until Sorce's brother Dan and Steve Printz (West Allis, WI) tangled on lap 10.  Dave Gorny (West Allis, WI) was on the charge and had worked his way up to third on lap 11 and Dan Sorce was back up to fourth on lap 13.  Gorny started having mechanical problems on lap 17 and faded in the field still managing a sixth place finish.  Don Sorce held on for the win with his brother finishing second in his first night out at Wilmot.

In his first night out at the Wilmot Speedway, Tony Schlei ran away from the rest of the field in the Street Stock division.  Jim Vandevere jumped out to an early lead but on lap four, Schlei was able to take over the top spot.  Schlei was never challenged and picked up the win.

In the Mini-Sprint Feature, Randy Reed (Spring Grove, IL) became the third different winner in three nights outlasting Ron Brannum (Barrington, IL) and the rest of the field.  Brannum had moved up to second on lap 7 and was slowing closing the gap on the leader Reed when the yellow came out on lap 11.  Brannum would take the lead on the restart but had some sort of mechanical problem on the white flag lap causing him to slow and giving the win to Reed.
