Schlafer, Heaney, Conn And Hensley Pick Up Wilmot Wins

(Wilmot, WI, July 31, 2004)  Son Danny Schlafer (Sussex, WI) and father Al Schlafer (Sussex, WI) finished first and second respectively in the Midwest Sprintcar Association’s feature event Saturday night.  Scott Conger (Eagle, WI) jumped from his front row starting spot to take the early lead, but relinquished it to Al Schlafer on the third lap.  By the fifth lap, Danny Schlafer had moved up to second with Conger, Lance Fassbender (Horicon, WI) and Mark Wernes Jr. (West Allis, WI) in tow.  Danny started hunting for a way around his dad, but father knew best and was able to hold him off.

After a lap 13 yellow, Danny was able to find the line he needed, slipping past Al on the low line to take the lead.  Within another lap Wernes and the seventh row starting Jerry Ski (Milwaukee, WI) were charging hard on Al, going three wide into turn three.  Wernes emerged in second chasing Danny as another exciting battle between Conger and Fassbender ensued for fifth place. While Ski and Wernes continued their battle for second, Conger slipped past Fassbender and went to work on Al.  After a lap 20 yellow, Al surged forward in an exciting battle past Wernes and Ski to reclaim second place. The last few laps saw Danny check out on the field and go on to claim his fourth feature win of the season with dad Al giving chase. 

Mike Conn (Big Bend, WI) jumped out to an early lead from his pole position in the Modified feature event until Elmer Everman (Kenosha, WI) took the inside groove past him on lap eight.  Conn and Everman traded the lead several times in a spirited but clean battle over the next couple laps until Conn was able to pull away and picked up his third feature win of the 2004 season.  Larry Marshall finished third and Scott Kuxhouse, driving for Matt Barnes, finished fourth.
 
Pat Heaney (West Allis, WI) became the third Sportsman driver to pick up two feature victories in 2004.  Heaney worked his way up from back in the field and held off arch rival Don Sorce Jr. (West Allis, WI) who was closing the gap as the checkered flag fell.  Tommy Moore (Muskego, WI) and Dave Gorny (West Allis, WI) rounded out the top four.
 
In the first of two Street Stock features, 56 year old Gary Foster (Kenosha, WI) showed the youngsters the quick way around the Wilmot Speedway.  Foster won easily over Nickie Sullivan (Trevor, WI) and Todd Hensley (Twin Lakes, WI).  In the second feature event, Sullivan appeared to be on the way to her first win but went around by herself on lap six.  Hensley took advantage of the miscue and went on to an easy win.  
 
The visiting Mini-Sprints also put on an exciting show in their main event.  Ron Brannum (Barrington, IL) took the lead on lap three and was pulling away until a yellow on lap seven bunched the field up behind him.  Moving up to the second spot was Tom Brown (Wonder Lake, IL) and tried to reel in the leader but ran out of laps.  Dave Lisowe (Chilton, WI) finished third and Terry Ahern (Mokeena, IL) fourth.

Ryan Mech of Greenfield, WI was the Junior Fan of the Week.  Next week, the MSA 360 Sprints, Mini-Sprints, Modifieds, Sportsman and Street Stock divisions compete in a full night of racing action.  Gates open at 5pm and racing starts at 7pm.  For more information visit the Wilmot Speedway website at www.wilmotspeedway.com or call the track at 262-862-2446.
