Gorny Two For Two In Triple Crown
Local Promotion's Wilmot Speedway
By Bill Mews

(Wilmot, WI, July 24, 2004)  Dave Gorny (West Allis, WI) sure is making the most of his feature wins this season.  His first victory came on June 5 in Round 1 of the Bill Mews RE/MAX Best Sportsman Triple Crown.  Saturday night he made it two for two when he picked up his second feature win in Round 2 of the Triple Crown.  Pat Heaney (West Allis, WI) had the lead when Bob Parker (South Milwaukee, WI) and points leader Don Sorce Jr. (West Allis, WI) tangled on lap seven.  Heaney and Gorny broke away from the rest of the field on the restart with Tommy Moore (Muskego, WI) holding down the third spot.  When Heaney drifted wide on lap 23, Gorny was able to slide under for the lead.  But the lead was short-lived as Heaney fought back and relegated Gorny to second on the next lap.  The final caution of the night came out when Steve Printz (West Allis, WI) coasted to a stop on the track and set up a five lap shootout.  Gorny was able to power past Heaney using the outside groove just as they completed lap 29 and held on for the victory.  Rookie competitor Ross Stalter (Hubertus, WI) finished third with his best finish of the season.

Danny Schlafer (Sussex, WI) won in convincing fashion to notch his third Feature win of the season in the Midwest Sprintcar Association (MSA) division.  The Feature opened up with a first lap melee on the front stretch as second row starting Dean Erfurth (Oregon, WI) lost control of his car doing a wheelie out of turn four collecting Scott Kuxhouse (Antioch, IL) and sending Kuxhouse for a hard flip into the wall, Kuxhouse was not injured.  Joe Wipperfurth (Sun Prairie, WI), Rob Pribnow (Lomira, WI) and Alex Crimmings (Mayville, WI) all suffered race ending damage trying to avoid the incident as a tangle of five cars came to a stop against the infield wall.  The full restart saw Schlafer coming from the second row go three wide into turn three launching past front row starters Scott Conger (Eagle, WI) and Chris Wiser (Neosho, WI).  With the race shortened to 10 laps due to time constraints, the action was fast and furious as many cars were lifting the front wheels out of the corners.  Schlafer went on to win with a straight-away lead with Wiser and Conger posting their best ever MSA finishes in second and third respectively.  David O'Neal (Milwaukee, WI) was able to nurse his car to a fourth place finish barely edging out the last lap charge of Scott Semmelmann (Brookfield, WI).

In the wild IMCA Modified Feature, Elmer Everman (Kenosha, WI) took the lead on lap seven and led the rest of the way to score his first feature victory of the 2004 season.  Mike Conn (Big Bend, WI) jumped out to the lead at the drop of the green but a stalled Tom Brown (Fox Lake, IL) brought out the first of several cautions on lap two.  On the restart, Nick Simons (Genoa City, WI), Mike Sullivan (Trevor, WI) and Dan Mech (Greenfield, WI) all got together in turn 2 bringing out the second caution.  The field was able to get in four more laps before Jeff Bodendorfer, Jr. (Waterford, WI) rolled his car hard at the end of the backstretch.  The car was trashed but Bodendorfer was unscathed.  Everman was able to get by Conn on lap seven and withstood a ferocious charge by Mike Bodendorfer (Muskego, WI) over the last several laps to earn the victory.

Due to local noise ordinances, the Street Stock feature event was cancelled.  Track management has decided to hold two features next week for the Street Stock division.
