O'Neal Wins MSA Headliner
Local Promotion's Wilmot Speedway
By Bill Mews
(Wilmot, WI, July 17, 2004) The Midwest Sprintcar Association Feature
event Saturday night saw five different leaders in the 25 lap event.
Alex Crimmings (Mayville, WI) jumped out to a short-lived lead until Lance
Fassbender (Horicon, WI) took control on lap 3. Holding down the top
spot until lap 18 Fassbender was chased by Crimmings and Tim Haddy (Lomira,
WI). Following a yellow on lap 18, Fassbender and Crimmings were
involved in a accident in turn one eliminating them from contention.
That made Haddy the new leader on the ensuing restart. K.J. Skelton
(Cascade, WI) quickly got by Haddy and held the top position until David
O'Neal (Milwaukee, WI) made a dramatic pass past both Haddy and Skelton with
just 2 laps to go. O'Neal held on to take the win.
John Poehler became the fifth different winner in six nights for the Sportsman
division. Poehler was able to get by Pat Heaney (West Allis, WI) on lap
10 and led the rest of the way in an uneventful but very competitive feature.
In the IMCA Modified Feature, Lee Tibbitts (Hebron, IL) led all but the first
three laps to score his first feature victory of the 2004 season. Jay
Crichton jumped out to the lead at the drop of the green but Tibbitts was able
to get by him on lap four. James Morrison (Antioch, IL) made good use of
several cautions to close the gap and had worked his way up to second and was
challenging for the lead when the checkered flag flew.
Jim Vandermeer ran away with the Street Stock division Feature after getting
by Nickie Sullivan (Trevor, WI) on lap three. Sullivan had led from the
start but wobbled coming out of the corner giving Vandermeer the room he
needed. Vandermeer was never challenged enroute to his third straight
feature win.
The Mini-Sprints Main Event featured an exciting battle between Tom Brown
(Wonder Lake, IL) and Brian Ramstack (Mukwonago, WI) with Brown holding on for
the victory.
Paul Greb of Kenosha was the Junior Fan of the Week and Stephen Maliborski of
Franklin won a gift certificate from Antioch Cyclery. Next week, the
Sportsman compete in Round 2 of the Bill Mews RE/MAX Best Triple Crown and
will be joined by the MSA 360 Sprints, Mini-Sprints, Modifieds and Street
Stock divisions for a full night of racing action. Gates open at 5pm and
racing starts at 7pm. For more information visit the Wilmot Speedway
