Meyer The New King Of WI Sprint Car Racing
Local Promotion's Wilmot Speedway
By Bill Mews
(Wilmot, WI, June 19, 2004) Steve Meyer will wear the crown as the King of WI
Sprint Car Racing for the next year after holding off Kurt Winker and Kurt
Davis Saturday night at the Wilmot Speedway in the Wayne Daun Memorial
event. Meyer held down the top spot from the drop of the green until lap
20, when both Davis and Winker managed to get by. With the best seat in
the house, Meyer watched Davis and Winker battle for the lead as they caught
up to lapped traffic. When the leaders touched going into turn three,
Meyer was able to take advantage of the miscue by dropping to the bottom and
getting past both. A caution with four laps remaining gave him a clean
track and he was able to hold off Winker and Davis for the win. The win
was his first in two years.
In the Sportsman headliner, second year driver, 18-year old Tommy Moore showed
the veterans the quick way around the speedway. Moore briefly gave up
the lead to Dave Gorny around the midpoint of the race but used a bump and run
technique to move Gorny out of the way and never looked back. The win
was the Hales Corner's Speedway's 2003 Rookie of the Year's first feature
win. Moore also picked up a heat race victory over Gorny earlier in the
evening.
Mike Conn became the first two-time feature winner at Wilmot in 2004 after
outlasting the rest of the field in the IMCA Modified feature. After
several attempts to get the even started, Conn was able to jump to the lead
from his outside, front row starting position. He was never seriously
challenged but had to hang on as his car was beginning to overheat with about
three laps remaining.
On Friday, June 25, the AMA Motorcycles and Quads will visit the speedway and
the regular Saturday night divisions will return on June 26 with the addition
of the Mini-Sprints.
