Mike Babicz Leaving Wilmot Speedway

by Jeff Wesell - Hartford, WI

For over twenty years, race fans and race teams have heard his voice at the Wilmot Speedway.   For over twenty years, he has brought his own unique style of announcing and motorsports promotion to the track, supporting the racers, crews, families and friends of the sport every race night. And on October 4th, Mike Babicz, "The Voice of The Wilmot Speedway," will step away from the track that he has worked since 1980.

Babicz's career in motorsports reaches back to his start in 1977 at the Waukegan Speedway as a scorer.   His start in racing also gave him public relations duties, as well as track maintenance and general duties around the facility.

In 1980, Babicz replaced "Jack at Trackside" Biddison as track announcer at Wilmot Speedway, working for Ray and Joan Toft.   Over the years, his duties expanded into marketing and public relations for past Wilmot promoters Debbie and Andy Calin, Marie Winker, and now Gary Brown and Mike & Terry Simons.  Since taking the role at Wilmot, Babicz has missed only one Saturday night race program, that being in June for 2001, when he attended his nephews wedding.

Babicz, who started and continues his annual racing show now headed for its 27th consecutive year March 19-21, 2004, The Let's Go Racing Motorsports Show, hosts a weekly motorsports radio program heard in Illinois and Wisconsin on AM 1220 WKRS, and has announced and emceed countless events over the years and for countless associations and tracks, will end his Wilmot era on October 4th during the final night of racing at the track in 2003.  Babicz plans to pursue other opportunities in motorsports in 2004 and beyond.

Fans, friends, former racers, and those wishing to salute Mike Babicz on his final "full-time" night at Wilmot are invited and should plan on attending the special race event on October 4th.

Plans are underway for a "roast" of Babicz on Saturday, March 20, 2004, as part of the "Let's Go Racing Motorsports Show."  Details will be announced.  Those wishing to participate contact Jeff Wesell at (262) 206-0159 or via email at: sprint99@charter.net
