AMSOIL Series & Tri Star Challenge Series Team Up for Superior SpringFest
For the first time in the history of the AMSOIL Late Model Series and the Tri
Star Late Model Challenge Series, the two Late Model touring groups will
combine forces and co-sanction the first ever Superior SpringFest, to be held
at the Superior Speedway on Wednesday, May 25th of this year.
This event will feature the best WISSOTA Late Model drivers in the business
from 6 states and Canada and should be a thriller of an event for both series
to kick off their 2005 campaigns. The AMSOIL series will run 6 races
throughout the 2005 season and will crown a champion in early September in
Superior, where the Tri Star Challenge Series will run upwards of 12 events
and will crown their champion in late August in Rice Lake, WI, but both series
will jump into action simultaneously in Superior on May 25th.
Defending AMSOIL Series Champion, Darrell Nelson of Hermantown, MN said
"This is the first AMSOIL and Challenge Series race of the season, so it
should bring in a lot of cars. When you race with better guys, you get better
plus we're racing for more money than we did last year at this show, so it
should be a big deal."
Challenge Series Director and Superior Speedway Promoter Chris Stepan stated
"I am extremely excited that we could work this deal out between the
Challenge Series and AMSOIL Series, because I think the 2 series have been
looked at as rivals in the past and I, along with everyone at AMSOIL, want to
work together to make this a humongous first-of-its-kind event. I truly
believe that bringing both series together for this show will be an awesome
event and should bring in upwards of 50 Late Model drivers to duke it out on
the ultra-fast 3/8 mile red clay oval."
The event will see drivers draw for their heat race starting position and then
qualify for the feature event via passing points. The top 6 drivers in passing
points after the heat races are completed will redraw for a pole dash and then
the finish of the dash will determine the lineup for the front three rows of
the 40-lap, $2,000 to win feature event. Drivers finishing 7th through 18th in
passing points will be directly locked into the feature.
After heat races are completed, as many b-features as needed will be run to
qualify 24 drivers for the main event and then in a cooperative effort, the
highest driver in the 2004 AMSOIL point standings that has failed to qualify
will be added as a provisional as well as the highest driver from the 2004 Tri
Star Challenge Series point standings that did not transfer to the main event
will also be added as a provisional to start 26 cars in the main event.
Three time and defending Tri Star Challenge Series Champion Pat Doar of New
Richmond, WI added "I think this co-sanctioned race will be good for
everyone. It will draw everyone in for this race because it is the first
AMSOIL and Challenge Series race of the season, so it should be a big race
that will be good for the whole deal. I am circling that date on my calendar
for sure!"
Drivers expected at this event include defending AMSOIL Series Champion
Darrell Nelson; defending Challenge Series Champion Pat Doar, along with John
Kaanta, Harry Hanson, Steve Vesel, Tom Nesbitt, Tim McMann, Jeff Provinzino,
Billy Byholm, Trent Follmer and Steve Laursen, who all finished in the top 10
in last year's AMSOIL Series point standings. Add in Joel Cryderman, Duane
Mahder, John Seitz, Lance Matthees, Kent Arment, Curt Gelling and Jeff Wildung,
who all finished in the top 10 of the Tri Star Series point standings a year
ago and you already have a stacked pool of drivers. Once you also add in Darin
Meierotto, Rick Hanestad, Jeff Broking and Andrew McKay, who finished in
Superior's top 10 track point standings, this event is already shaping up to
be one full of talent. You can also count on defending WDRL Series Champion
and former Superior Speedway track champion Brady Smith to be on hand as well
as 2004 Xtreme Dirtcar Series runner-up Jimmy Mars to be in Superior for this
event. Many other drivers have expressed interest in attending this event to
set their sites on chasing the championship with one series or the other
including Terry Casey, Tim Buhler, Carter Gerlach, Mitch Johnson, Brad Seng,
Tom Waseleski, Bob Reed, Mike Nutzmann, Bob Broking, Caley Emerson, Todd Gehl,
Kelly Estey, Roger Paolo, Justin Fegers, Eddie Kirchoff, Dave Zimmerman, Jon
