Stepan Named Promoter At Superior Speedway

(2/25/05 Superior, WI)  The Superior Speedway Board of Directors and Superior Speedway Inc. are extremely excited to announce the hiring of Chris Stepan as the lightning fast, 3/8-mile track's new Race/Event Promoter for the 2005 racing season.  The Board and Stepan have been finalizing arrangements regarding this position over the past few weeks and are thrilled to be able to announce it publicly at this time.

Stepan is no stranger to dirt track racing or to the Superior Speedway and was an obvious first choice to replace recently departed Butch Erickson at the helm for the upcoming season after Erickson and his wife Linda decided to step down from the positions of promoting the speedway in late January due to personal reasons. Stepan served as the announcer at the speedway during the 2004 season and seems to be up to the challenge of promoting the speedway's day to day operations. When Stepan was asked his thoughts on taking on this new task, he stated with a smile "It is no secret to anyone that Superior has been one of my favorite tracks to watch racing at since I was a kid and after working there last year, I have come to love the place even more than in the past. It is an honor that the speedway board thought of me to come on board to continue down the road Butch and the Erickson's have paved over the past several seasons. Butch and I are good friends and he tells me that he totally supports this and will do what he can to help out, which means a lot to me as well as the rest of the speedway board."

Speedway board member Cindy Bloomquist stated "We are extremely excited to have Chris as our new Promoter. Chris brings a tremendous amount of knowledge, enthusiasm, experience and a great working relationship with drivers, fans, sponsors and area promoters and will be a good fit and will work well with our board. We are very happy to bring him on board and are looking forward to a super season here in Superior."

Although this will be Stepan's first yearly promoter's position, Chris has been involved on the promoting side of race events for several years, serving as the Director of WISSOTA's Late Model Challenge Series as well as promoting the Viking Fall Classic at the Viking Speedway for the past 2 seasons. Stepan will have his hands full, trying to get everything into place for the season opener, which is less than 12 weeks away, but again with a smile he said "Working under pressure seems to fit me well, because it seems that I always have a million things going on at once, but I work very hard to get everything accomplished to the best of my abilities. I am also very confident that I will have tremendous support from the speedway board as well as the Douglas County Board to help get things ready for the May 13th opener. The speedway board, consisting of Rob Miller, Cindy Bloomquist, Harlow Filteau, Joyce Klick, Rob Ghyselinck, Al Uotinen, Rick Rivord and Katie Birdseye, have been very instrumental in getting the ball rolling in dealing with areas that need to be wrapped up now and our speedway attorney Rick Gondik has also been a big help. I can tell you that I will do whatever is necessary to ensure that the 2005 racing season at Superior is the best that it can be and am looking forward to one of the most diverse schedules that the northland has ever seen."

Currently on tap at the Superior Speedway in 2005 will be weekly Friday night racing, which will consist of WISSOTA Late Models, Modifieds, Super Stocks and Street Stocks on an every Friday basis, with the Midwest Modifieds and Pure Stocks switching off every other week. Also on the card will tentatively be 2 Amsoil Series Late Model events, 2 TriStar Challenge Series Late Model events, 2 WDRL Super Series Late Model events, 2 IRA Sprint Car events, the annual JW Zembo Super Stock Classic, the annual Russ Laursen Classic, and of course the year-ending blowout known as the Northern Nationals. Fans of any and all types of stock car racing should be able to enjoy themselves immensely at the track this summer and we hope to see you all there.

Stepan also wanted to make known that "Now that all of the rumors of the track being in turmoil are put to rest, I want everyone to also know that the purse structure for all divisions will NOT BE CUT and we are working very hard to restore the traditional Head of the Lakes Fair races to the '05 schedule. I truly believe that the 2005 racing season in Superior will be the biggest and best ever and I am looking forward to the challenge of making sure the Superior Speedway is continued to be looked upon as one of the top-level speedway's around!
