Greinig Returns To Shootout Victory Lane At Rockford

ROCKFORD SPEEDWAY - ROCKFORD, IL (7/27/2008) – Veteran racers ruled the Rockford Speedway in the Legends Division as Herman Greinig and Dave Townsend battled for the feature win, holding off the young kids following close behind. At the end, it was Greinig in victory lane for the first time since April of last year.

After a big wreck on Wednesday night, Max McNamara arrived at the Rockford Speedway with an unfamiliar racecar. Two heat races helped him get better acquainted with the ride, but the results were not good forcing him to start the feature in last place. McNamara wasted no time when the green flag fell, charging up to the lead pack of six with only four laps in the books. By the midway point, McNamara found himself in third, right behind leader Greinig and Townsend. When Ross Kenseth got a better run off the fourth turn and hit McNamara hard and square on the rear bumper, the race ended for Max. With his bumper dragging behind him, McNamara was black flagged and retired from the race.

With one challenger gone, Greinig still had others to hold off, and that he did, all the way to the checkered flag of the caution free race. Townsend, Aaron Moyer, Matt Booker and Kenseth crossed the line right behind Greinig to round out the top five.

“I had a wad of cars behind me,” said Greinig as he climbed out of the winning car. “First (win) of the year.”

John Beinlich had a typical race day sweeping the heat and feature races in the Allison Legacy division. In the feature race, David Cooter led early while Beinlich tried a couple different unsuccessful passes to work his way to the front. Five laps into the race, Beinlich finally made to right move passing Cooter on the inside and taking over the point. Cooter remained on his back bumper until just before the halfway point when he spun exiting the fourth turn bringing out the only caution of the race. When the race restarted Beinlich took off towards the checkers, winning his sixth series race of the season. Dwight Dunlap took second place and Austin Mennen crossed the line in third.

Corey Cootware and his family travel a long way from their home in Upper Michigan to race in the series, and he has been making the most out of it lately. Driving like a veteran at the Rockford Speedway, Cootware kept his Bandolero reved up as he flew around the top of the track. Sunday proved to be Cootware’s day in more ways than one. No one could catch him, allowing the long distance driver to sweep the both heat races and the feature in convincing fashion. Also, Cootware got to celebrate a victory on his birthday, number ten for the racing veteran. Kyle Vergatta brought his ride home second followed by Kelsie Dunlap. Fourth place was captured by sixteen year old Nick Carnes who had turned his first laps in a Bandolero right before the first heat race.

Garett Goodwin and Camden Murphy split the heat race wins in the Super Cup Junior division putting the two youngsters on the front row of the feature. While the two separated themselves from the field with Murphy in the lead, the battle for third heated up. Throughout the mid point of the race Cody Lipstreuer and Morgan Schissel battled side by side lap after lap. Then, to add to the excitement, each driver took turns driving underneath the other exiting turns two and four. Lipstreuer eventually took over the third spot with a few laps left in the race. Murphy held off Goodwin for the win as Lipstreuer and Schissel crossed the line in third and fourth place.

The Summer Shootout returns to the Rockford Speedway on Sunday, September 21st and then the following Saturday, September 27th for the finale at the Milwaukee Mile. Practice starts at 11:00am, with racing at high noon. The series features free admission as race fans are invited to come out and watch the races from bleachers in the infield of the Milwaukee Mile.
