Drivers Streaky At Milwaukee Mile

MILWAUKEE MILE - WEST ALLIS, WI (6/14/2008) – A beautiful sunny day greeted the racers as the Summer Shootout returned to the Milwaukee Mile where streaks were a huge part of the results. A threat every week, Max McNamara followed up a win at Rockford in the last series race with his first win of the season at the Milwaukee Mile. Kyle Vergatta is making a home in Victory Lane with his third win in the Bandolero division at the Mile. Drivers in four divisions took to the mini-Mile in the sixth event of the season.

Kyle Vergatta dominated the Bandolero division by sweeping both heats and the feature race. Starting the feature on the pole, Vergatta took the green flag ahead of Upper Michigan’s Cory Cootware and stayed out front, leading all fifteen laps and taking the checkers. Cootware finished in second followed by TJ Graczkowski. After winning his first ever series race, Vergatta has been unstoppable at the mini-Mile with this feature race win being his third in a row at the oval.

Pat Gill used the practice session and the first heat race to figure out the track and used that little bit of experience and some handling to take the second heat and feature wins in the Go-Kart division. While Phil Reints had the horsepower down the straightaway, Gill used corner speed to his advantage to get out front. At the checkers, it was Gill winning in his first ever visit to the Summer Shootout.

Once again, it was the John Beinlich show at the Milwaukee Mile. While the other drivers are getting closer to keeping up with the now five time feature winner, Beinlich looks as if he is playing with the field on the flat challenging track at the Milwaukee Mile. Dwight Dunlap is the closest to keeping up with Beinlich but once again had to settle for second in the feature race. Caylie Duncanson is getting quicker each week at the Mile and came home third while Colton Clevenger wasn’t able to recover from an early race spin and settled for fourth.

Max McNamara is always quick in the Legends division, but early in the season it seemed like bad luck was riding along with him. McNamara has turned things around and, continuing his new trend, won both heat races today. After two complete restarts to get the feature rolling, McNamara took the point and didn’t look back. Not looking back was a good plan as Matt Booker stuck to his bumper and did everything he could to take the lead away. McNamara was not to be denied as he led every lap on the way to his second feature win in a row in the Summer Shootout Series. Booker settled for second and rookie Legends racer, Aaron Moyer finished in third, his best result of the season.

While John Zeilinga held a comfortable lead in the FIRA feature race, Rascal drivers Jason Mahoney and Gary Cooper moved past Kai McNulty and battled all the way to the finish line to see who would take second. On the last lap Mahoney took the inside line through the fourth turn. As the drivers drag raced out of the final turn, Cooper held on to second but slipped a little and Mahoney was able to get along side. When the checkers flew and the cars crossed the line, it was Mahoney, by inches, capturing second in the most exciting finish of the day.

The Summer Shootout returns to the Milwaukee Mile on Sunday, July 13th. Practice starts at 11:00am, with racing at high noon. The series features free admission as race fans are invited to come out and watch the races from bleachers in the infield of the Milwaukee Mile.
