ROCKFORD, IL (4/20/2008) -
Round two of the 2008 Summer Shootout took place at the Rockford Speedway. For the first time in the history of the series, the racers took to a track other than the Milwaukee Mile.
Alex Arelano showed that he knows his way around Rockford with a sweep of the Legends heat races and a win in the feature. Arelano was came from the middle of the pack to win the heat races and led every lap of the feature for a dominating day at the track. Dave Townsend passed Matt Booker on the first lap of the feature and held him off the rest of the race to come home second. Booker remained in third followed by Max McNamara and Cullen Camasta. McNamara had a fast car but needed to overcome a number of obstacles to finish in fourth. The biggest obstacle McNamara overcame was making it to the track after breaking a cam shaft at Milwaukee the day before. Cody Townsend also suffered the same problem at Milwaukee but unfortunately his luck stayed bad as his car found the wall when the field slowed down for a caution early in the first heat race, finishing the youngster’s day.
A good portion of the Super Cup Series showed up to race both the Junior and Senior division at the Rockford Speedway. While the Senior division featured an exciting late race charge for the win by Erik Gehrke, the Junior division was the race of the day. From the drop of the green flag, the cars of Kyle Brinkmann and Camden Murphy, starting on the front row together, could not get away from each other. The action ramped up as each lap clicked off with the two youngsters exchanging the lead at each turn in the final laps of the race. Finally, Brinkmann was able to get the advantage off of the last turn and he held off Murphy in a drag race to the finish line. Both drivers celebrated in the pits with a high five and memories of probably the most fun race of their young careers.
The Senior division of the Super Cup Series saw David Cerer running upfront for the entire race until a caution bunched of the field for what would be the final restart of the race. On the restart, it would be Cerer’s teammate Gehrke charging into the lead and taking the win away. Following Gehrke to the line was Sam Morici with Cerer finishing third.
John Beinlich dominated the Allison Legacy division and John Zeilinga dominated the FIRA races with each driver winning the heat races and features.
Next up is round three of the Summer Shootout at the Milwaukee Mile on Sunday, May 18th. Please visit http://www.racingwisconsin.com/summershootout for announcements, news results and more information about the Summer Shootout Series.
