MILWAUKEE (July 11, 2007) – With his third win in a row, Blake Brown continues to be the car to beat in the Legend Summer Shootout action Wednesday night at the Milwaukee Mile. In the other battles, Dwight Dunlap took home his first victory in the Allison Legacy division and Aaron Moyer held off Jesse Bernhagen for his third victory of the season in the Bandolero division.
John Beinlich had Dwight Dunlap covered in all but two laps on the night. Beinlich won both heat races flag to flag with Dunlap running right behind. In the feature race Beinlich again took control of the race but, with the white flag getting read to fly, he was unable to keep control of his car through the third turn. As he spun, Dunlap took the lead and never looked back.
“I caught him looking in the mirror and, I got on the gas,” said a celebrating Dunlap in Victory Lane. “That was the most fun I’ve had racing in 20 years.”
“I was just trying a different line,” explained Beinlich as he congratulated Dunalp, “and it just got away from me.”
The continuing saga between Aaron Moyer and Jesse Bernhagen continued Wednesday night. With the two youngsters trading off winning nights, it was Moyer’s turn to run at the front. Moyer stole away the celebration of Bernhagen’s 14th birthday by taking sweeping the wins in Bandolero racing. No matter how they lined up the finish was the same with Moyer taking the win, Bernhagen in second, Adam Rawski in third and a much improving Kyle Vergata in fourth. Each week Vergata has been making progress learning the racing lines and has moved himself into racing contention. He will be one to watch as the season continues.
Legend racing is fast, furious and close racing at the short, tight “mini Mile”. The one constant has always been action. A new constant is that Blake Brown will be at the front of the pack and if he isn’t, he will be soon. As other drivers wrestle their cars around the turns, Brown has the set up and driving that makes his laps smooth and fast. Starting in the third position in the first heat and the eighth position in the second heat proved to not matter. Brown charged to the front won the first heat and finished second to Max McNamara in the second heat.
From the pole position, Brown was passed for the lead on the start of the race by McNamara. Brown regained the lead on the second lap and took off as Dave Townsend began to battle with McNamara for the second position. The two would battle the entire race as Brown put more distance between himself and second place. A caution for Tim Narr’s issues on the backstraight brought the field back together just before the halfway point in the race. The restart proved to be more of the same as Brown stretched out his lead. Townsend took over the second spot from McNamara and held on to the finish. Kyle Jusits worked his way up to finish in fourth followed by Herman Greinig in fifth. Both Jusits and Greinig returned to action for the first time at the Summer Shootout after missing races due to wrecks at other tracks.
The Summer Shootout returns to the Milwaukee Mile next week, July 18th for the final Wednesday night race. Racing returns to Saturday afternoons on July 28th. Practice starts at 5:00pm, with racing at 6:00pm. The series features free admission, race fans are invited to come out and watch the races from bleachers in the infield of the Milwaukee Mile.
