Bilderback, Arelano, Beinlich and Piecko, Jr. Take Checkers At Mile Summer Shootout

Milwaukee – August 23, 2006 – The competitors were not only racing themselves but also an encroaching thunderstorm, Wednesday evening at the Milwaukee Mile. With the seasons end on the horizon as well, the Summer Shootout drivers all know that now is the time to rack up the wins and make their move in the point standings.

The Thunder Roadster division point battle is pretty much a done deal with Mike Piecko, Jr.’s early season wins vaulting him to the top. His father, Mike Piecko, Sr., on the other hand just wants to beat the kid. After leading the first half of the heat race, Mike Sr. was passed for the lead by Mike Jr. and then had mechanical problems force him out of contention. The big question was then if the car could be fixed in time to run the feature. The Roadster was fixed but the results would be the same in the feature. Mike Sr. took the lead at the start of the race. Then, with 6 laps to go, Mike Jr. moved to the front and held off Mike Sr. for his fifth win of the season.

Last week, Nick Beinlich decided to be the ultimate sportsman in the Feature race. When Michael Bilderback spun out, Beinlich waited for him to catch up and make a race out of it. The move bit Beinlich as Bilderback passed him and took the win away. This week, first time Allison Legacy driver, Todd Booker, challenged Beinlich in the division. Booker took the lead on the start of the race but got out of shape and drove into the grass in the first turns. Beinlich took over the top spot and, learning from last week, never looked back. The win was Beinlich’s third in the Summer Shootout Series this year.

Alex Arelano returned to top form by winning the Bandolero heat race giving him the pole position for the feature race. Capitalizing on the starting spot Arelano jumped out to the lead immediately. Trying to run him down was the freight train of Blake Brown, Aaron Moyer and Kyle Jusits. When Jusits spun at the mid point of the race, he didn’t lose a position but, his shot at a win went away. The shot for anyone to win over Arelano became smaller and smaller as the race went on. Arelano pulled away and took the checkers in the caution free race. Following him to the line were Brown and Moyer with Jusits holding on to fourth and Kyle Piecko taking over fifth place with a pass at the line.

The feature race of the Legends division ran without yellow flags as well. Curt Gnatzig has shown a little more horsepower in recent weeks and was on the rear bumper of leader Michael Bilderback’s car from the drop of the green flag. The crowd in the stands fixated on this battle, watching every turn to see if Gnatzig could get position and make the pass. Bilderback was able to hold him off for the entire race and took home his division leading fifth win of the season. Gnatzig settled for second with Lyle Kuklinski in third. Herman Greinig and rookie Tim Narr rounded out the top five. The Legends division had the closest battle in the point standings with Bilderback and Ryan Miles tied for the lead going into the night. Unfortunately, Miles had to miss this week because of football practice, giving the lead to Bilderback. Miles tried to make it to the track in time for the feature but couldn’t due to the accelerated schedule of the night.

The season finale Summer Shootout racing is next week at the Milwaukee Mile on Wednesday, August 30 th, with the Allison Legacy, Thunder Roadster, Bandolero and Legend cars. Practice starts at 5:00pm with racing starting at 6:00pm. Admission into the grandstands for the 2006 Summer Shootout series is free for all spectators.
