Rookies Rule In The Summer Shootout At The Milwaukee Mile By John Wiedemann – www.racingwisconsin.com Milwaukee – July 5, 2006 – A couple of rookies stole the show in the sixth round of the Summer Shootout Series at the Milwaukee Mile. Camden Murphy swept the Super Cup division and Alex Arelano almost did the same in the Bandolero division. Mike Piecko, Jr. continued his dominance of the Thunder Roadsters while Bill Hobson and Ryan Miles visited victory lane in the Allison Legacy and Legend divisions respectively. Thirty cars took to the track Wednesday night in the growing series. With Morgan Schissel winning all of the Super Cup feature races this year, it was a bit of a surprise when another nine year old, Camden Murphy, was able to hold him off and sweep both heat races as well as the feature race. Schissel had clutch issues in the first heat race and that problem kept him from running in the second heat. In the feature Schissel made a charge for the lead but was forced into the grass, eliminating his chance to battle for the victory. The feature came down to the last lap with Murphy crossing the line just ahead of Greg Ballard after a close battle for the entire race. With only five races under his belt, rookie Murphy can now call himself a winner at the Milwaukee Mile. The Allison Legacy cars made another appearance at the Shootout. Bill Hobson started on the pole and led the early part of the race. At the midpoint of the race Hobson and second place, Dave Cooter, Jr. spun between the third and fourth turns. Both cars were able to continue without the caution flag coming out. Mike Piecko, Sr. snuck by and took off to a commanding lead. Piecko’s lead was short lived as he spun his ride, giving the positions back to Hobson and Cooter. Piecko made one last charge up to second place, but was unable to hold on and dropped to the third spot at the finish line. Hobson took the checkers in first followed by Cooter in second. Colin Larson was unable to start the feature due to damage suffered in the heat race. Last week, Alex Arelano received credit for the feature win in a rain-shortened night. This week, he proved that he is one to be reckoned with by winning a heat race as well as the feature. Arelano took the lead in the feature race and held on all the way to the checkered flag. It wasn’t an easy win as Blake Brown was able to reach Arelano’s rear bumper, but couldn’t make the move for the lead. Brown crossed the line in second place. Aaron Moyer finished in third place after putting on one of his best performances of the series, battling with the leaders in the heats as well as the feature. Kyle Jusits fell back in the pack after spinning his ride but was able to move his way into fourth place at the end of the race. With a last lap pass, Dwight Dunlap took the fifth position away from Jesse Bernhagen. The usual Thunder Roadster racers, Mike Piecko Sr. and Jr. were joined once again by Dave Townsend. Mike Piecko Jr. has been dominating the series since last year but, Townsend put himself in a position to win after exchanging the lead with Junior a few times during the mid point of the race. With the white flag waving above them, Piecko Jr. passed Townsend on the outside heading into turn one and stayed in front for the final lap to take the win. Townsend came away with second place and Piecko Sr. crossed the line in third. A heat win by each put Curt Gnatzig and Michael Bilderback on the front row of the Bandolero feature. Bilderback wasted little time jumping out to the lead on the start and left the pack behind with a growing lead. Behind him Gnatzig was busy battling Ryan Miles to take the second spot. Gnatzig took over the second spot only to have Miles try to pass inside coming out of the fourth turn. Gnatzig was forced into the grass and had to give the spot up to Miles as he struggled to regain control. “I hated getting into Curt there,” explained Miles, “I tried to get underneath and the car just kept pushing out.” The pass proved to be the winning move as a lap later, Bilderback pulled his car off the track with a blown engine. Miles went on to take the victory followed closely by Gnatzig and Kyle LaPier. Eric Barth and George Giesen rounded out the top five. Summer Shootout racing returns to the Milwaukee Mile next Wednesday, July 12th, with the Allison Legacy, Thunder Roadster, Bandolero and Legend cars. Practice starts at 5:00pm with racing starting at 6:00pm. Admission into the grandstands for the 2006 Summer Shootout series is free for all spectators.
