Round And Around: Full Moon At Slinger Speedway

The super late models returned to Slinger Speedway Sunday after a week off, and the weather was welcoming to all. Several visitors were among the regulars throughout the divisions, and kids filled the infield during intermission to get rides in the race cars. The scoreboard, which was hit by lightning weeks ago, remains blank. There is no longer a quick fix for the outdated circuitry, but Wayne Erickson tells me that technicians will try one more thing this week.

Dennis Prunty showed his determination Sunday by posting the quickest lap in the super late models. Conrad Morgan won the six-car dash, then Brandon Hill led the four transferees in the 25-lap semi feature. A shallow invert started Prunty in the fourth row for the 60-lap feature this week, Josh Wallace and Fred Winn in the front row. Wallace was up to the task at the drop of the green flag, but only three laps were complete when Steve Apel and Brad Keith tangled. Two laps later another spun car regrouped the field, then the race sped on with Wallace leading the way. Suddenly Wallace slowed and left the track, leaving a trail of fluids behind, giving Morgan the point just before twenty laps were complete. Point leader Lowell Bennett shared the second-row start with Morgan, and got past Morgan after the caution.

With fifteen laps remaining another spin brought Prunty alongside Bennett for the double-file restart. The pair ran in tandem with Bennett able to regain the lead only briefly as Prunty led the remaining laps. The pair were closely followed by Morgan and Tommy Hromadka, the quartet far ahead of the others. Lapped cars got in the way with the checkered flag in view, bringing a scary moment. The top three nearly collided trying to get past a slower mount, but their years of experience came in handy in avoiding disaster. Prunty, whose preference for the outer lane is no secret, got his way this week, claiming, "It was a hot one out there. It was crazy." Asked about the three-wide situation, Prunty remarked, "I didn't know we were three wide. Thanks for telling me, spotter," then said, "It was a good race and a clean race." Hromadka, who began in the sixth row, was happy with fourth place, followed by Mike Egan's progress from the seventh row to fifth place.

The sportsman contingent was topped by James Swan in time, then Jimmie Evans won the dash. The 30-lap feature began Mike Lange on the pole, leading every lap to win on the night he brought a busload of sponsors and fans. But Swan nearly ruined things in the closing circuits, Lange thwarting all efforts as the laps wound down to the end without a caution. Earlier Lange had told your scribe he couldn't continue his weekly racing any more, which made this win more important as he took a reverse victory lap. For those of you who may not know, this is done in memory of Wisconsin's NASCAR champion, Alan Kulwicki, who did the first reverse victory lap on his first win and championship.

The limited late models saw Rob Braun top the qualifiers and Ryan DeStefano win the dash. The 30-lap feature began with DeStefano and Mike Graczkowski in the front row, and Graczkowski took charge right away. Five laps later DeStefano was sent to the rear of the pack after an incident with Jake Vanoskey that nearly caught Brad Dahmer. After the restart Dahmer and Pat McIntee made contact, McIntee's mount hard into the wall. Earlier problems prevented McIntee from qualifying, and this was the last straw. No other incidents followed after this, Graczkowski spinning donuts before taking a reverse victory lap in celebration. Chris Blawat came from the fifth row to finish third for a good night.

The Thunder Stocks began with Al Stippich taking quick time, but the rest of the show was Andy Welter. Staying ahead of Stippich in the five-lap dash, Welter began the feature in the third row. Newcomer Cory Manders led the first three circuits from the pole before Welter got past in the nonstop race. Sixteen laps and a sixteen-old winner seemed fitting Sunday night. Stippich, who began in the last row, was thwarted on his way to the front, only able to get up to third place at the checkered flag.

The Slinger Bees were topped by another 16-year old as Alex Prunty took quick time. The semi allowed the top two to the feature, which was staged at 16 circuits. The front row hogged all the action, with Russ Lorbiecki leading from the outside, then Brandon Tackes getting past a couple laps later. The race ran to completion in no time, Tackes earning his best birthday present of the day. Nick Wagner came from seventh to finish second, and Prunty's twelfth-place start ended with a third-place finish.

A small field of small machines came to Slinger as the Wisconsin Sport Trucks made another visit. Jake Bolding topped the field in all but the heat race, which was won by Jeff Looker. The nonstop feature had three different leaders as the little trucks zoomed around Slinger's high banks without lifting.

Several citizens took turns in the speedway rental cars, and others raced against each other in the spectator eliminations. Then it was time for the Figure 8 race, closing Sunday night with the last thrills of the show as Shane Becker stayed ahead of Scott Goetzke. The program was complete before 10 o'clock as the full moon shone bright overhead. Thus we completed another full moon weekend. There's always more.
