Utphall Looking To Add More Success In The ASA Midwest Sportsman Division
by Kari Shear-Carlson
5/6/2010
(Thursday, May 6, 2010) His goal is to have fun, be a top contender at each race and to be in the running for the championship while trying to maintain funding throughout the season. Shawn Upthall (pronounced ut-paul) joined the ASA Midwest Sportsman Tour for the inaugural 2010 racing season, adding to his already long list of racing experience.
In 1992, Utphall took home the rookie of the year title in the Hales Whales division at Hales Corners Speedway, a dirt track just west of Milwaukee, WI. A few years later, he moved into the dirt sportsman division and claimed the rookie of the year in that division as well.
After taking a few years off, Utphall decided to take to asphalt racing at the historic Lake Geneva Speedway in the weekly sportsman division. Claiming a few feature wins, fast qualifier awards and several heat races, he found himself fourth in the final point standings, his best season yet. The driver of the #2 Bill's Speedshop Chassis, 1988 Chevy Monte Carlo SS, tried his hand in the Mid-American Stock Car Series gaining some top-five finishes with victories at Wisconsin International Speedway and Lacrosse Fairgrounds Speedway in 2003.
Steve Einhaus, ASA Midwest Tour Vice President, is looking forward to the leadership Utphall will bring to the series. "It is good to see some veterans joining the series and Shawn has a lot of experience in these types of cars with a lot of success. He will be a leader and an advocate for the series and he will also be a contender at every race," added Einhaus.
Utphall is looking forward to travelling from track to track and getting to know drivers he has not had the opportunity to race with in the past. He is also looking forward to the field of competition that the ASA Midwest Sportsman Tour has in store. "I am excited to get back behind the wheel and race in a division that is very close in competition and not dominated by the high buck pockets."
The ASA Midwest Sportsman Tour gives drivers the opportunity to adapt to different tracks and racing conditions, something that Utphall is looking forward to in his Borchardt's Speed and Automotive 355 Chevy powered sportsman. "I think racing in the Sportsman Tour will help many drivers become better drivers as they learn and adapt to new tracks and conditions," added the veteran driver. "It is not about being a big fish in a little pond for me, but being a little fish in a big pond and winning"
Shawn could not be doing what he is doing without the loving support of his wife, Tracy Rae, and two children; Devon and Shawn Jr. "Uncle" Kevin Utphall has been helping Shawn since he started racing. In fact, the first car he ever drove was Kevin's sportsman in Kevin's back yard at the young age of 12. Jim Madon and Dennis Koss, both car owners and crewmembers are the ones Utphall credits to getting him back into racing.
Starting with a bare chassis and only three weeks to prepare, the #2 DRTJ Electrical sponsored car made its debut at Madison International Speedway on Sunday May 2nd in the "Joe Shear Classic 35." Unfortunately, the Maddog Motorsports team only completed 11 laps in the 35-lap main event, but Utphall is looking forward to heading to Dells Raceway Park on May 15th for the "Cabin Fever 50."
The ASA Midwest Sportsman Tour will once again join the American Speed Association® Kwik Trip Midwest Tour presented by ECHO Outdoor Power Equipment and grandstay.net on Friday, June 11th at Hawkeye Downs in Cedar Rapids, IA for the "Keith Fleck/Miller 25."
