Schill Scores 5th Win Of 2006 At Slinger
By Dan Margetta

(Slinger, WI) Sept. 3 - Al Schill used the outside lane to his advantage, making a late race pass of Jeremy Lepak, en route to his fifth late model feature victory of the season Sunday night at the Slinger Super Speedway in the Port-A-John 100.

"Maybe it was a little experience and saving something for the end," Schill explained when asked afterwards how he managed to pull off the win after Lepak's car seemed so strong in the middle stages. "It also helped to start on the outside as that was his (Lepak's) lane and he was running the outside when he was in front of me because that's where he was the most comfortable," Schill continued. "It all worked out in the end."

Nick Schumacher led the opening laps while Schill, Dennis Prunty, and Conrad Morgan followed. Schumacher paced the first seven laps before stalling on the speedway with mechanical problems, producing the first caution flag and handing the lead to Schill. Schill led Prunty and Morgan on the restart with Tony Strupp, Lowell Bennett, and Mike Strupp holding down the rest of the top five positions. Prunty tried to pressure Schill for the lead, but soon he too experienced mechanial issues, leaving the speedway on lap ten. With Schill continuing to show the way, Morgan and Tony Strupp fought hard over the second spot and their aggressive racing eventually led to a multi-car spin in turn three involving Mike Strupp and Matt Kocourek as the caution flew again on lap 12.

Again, Schill was on the marks for the restart as behind him, Morgan and Bennett contested second place with Bennett using the inside to sneak by at the stripe. Bennett held strong on the inside line and quickly closed on Schill, rubbing the rear bumper of Schill’s car slightly as they exited turn two, but Schill remained the leader. Schill eventually eased ahead of Bennett while both Lepak and David Prunty used the inside groove to work their way around Morgan and into third and fourth place respectively. Lepak has his car hooked up nicely in the middle stages and he first tracked down Bennett with an inside move on lap 40 and then quickly took to the outside to race around Schill for the lead a lap later. Lepak began to stretch out his advantage over Schill while Bennett and Prunty raced for third. Debris on the racetrack produced the final caution flag of the event on lap 78, erasing Lepak's lead and allowing Schill to close in.

Lepak chose the inside line for the restart, leaving Schill to use the outside lane and the decision proved to be costly to Lepak as Schill immediately charged alongside as racing resumed. Using the outside groove, Schill stayed directly alongside Lepak, gradually gaining an advantage by not allowing Lepak's car to run free off the corners. Schill took the lead for good on lap 83, as Lepak's car appeared to push off the turns, sending him into a battle with Prunty for second place. Schill drove the remaining laps perfectly and scored his fifth feature win of the season while Lepak held off Prunty for second. Bennett finished in the fourth spot ahead of John Mueller who was fifth. Morgan took the checkered flag in sixth place while Matt Kocourek, Fred Winn, Mike Egan, and Gary LaMonte completed the top ten finishers.

Rich Bickle won the 30-lap late model semi-feature while Gary LaMonte edged Collin Bamke with an impressive last lap move to snag second place at the stripe. Scott Schoeni and Pete Wiedmeyer rounded out the top five finishers. Jerry Eckhardt won the 15-lap late model consi over Ron Ragan, Shawn Roethle, and Chris Blawat. Mike McCabe was fifth. Tony Strupp was the winner of the late model fast dash and David Prunty paced qualifying after turning in a lap at 11.349 seconds.

Pat McIntee held off Scott Ascher and Dave Thomas to take top honors in the 30-lap Midwest Sportsman Series feature.

Jeff Holtz paced the first two circuits, racing alongside Mike Borchardt, who edged ahead to lead on lap three. McIntee raced his way around Holtz on the inside lane to take second place, bringing Ascher along with him and into third. Corey Funk found the wall in turn three to draw a caution flag on lap 14 and Borchardt led McIntee and Ascher for the restart. As Borchardt and McIntee entered turn one side by side when racing resumed, Borchardt suddenly spun in the inside lane and the race was quickly under the yellow flag again with McIntee now holding down the lead. McIntee led Ascher and Rob Braun for the restart, as behind them, track championship contenders, Brad Keith and Mike Graczkowski contested fourth place. The battle over fourth place heated up a few laps later on lap 17 when Graczkowski appeared to get loose in turn two, spinning directly in front of Keith as the two made significant contact in turn three with the caution waving. McIntee led Ascher as the green flag waved while Dave Thomas used the restart to work his way into third place, passing Rob Braun and Kenny Joosten. McIntee's advantage slowly began to disappear as the laps wound down and both Ascher and Thomas filled McIntee's rear view mirror. Ascher took a look to the inside on the final lap, but was unable to pass and McIntee drove to the win. Following Ascher, Thomas finished in third place while Joosten and Jimmie Evans completed the top five.

Earlier, Ascher won the Midwest Sportsman Series fast dash and the division's fastest qualifier for the evening was Dave Thomas who toured the speedway in 12.641 seconds.

Scott Nottestad, Nick Schumacher, and Andy Wendt entered the final Limited Late Model main event of the season, just seven points apart in the season standings and when all was settled, Nottestad captured the track championship while Jerry Eckhardt drove away with the 30-lap feature win.

Rick Corso paced the event for six laps, before Eckhardt took command with an aggressive inside move on lap seven. Brad Keith also raced his way around Corso and into second place just before the caution flag appeared when championship contenders Nottestad and Wendt tangled in turn two. Eckhardt continued to lead on the restart while Corso fought hard with Keith for second place. Corso took the spot on lap 12 and with Keith caught on the outside, both Jeff Steenbergen and Rob Braun also managed to pass by and into third and fourth respectively. Nick Wendt also advanced his way forward, slicing all the way to second place by lap 20. Steenbergen's bid for the win came to an end on lap 22 when he slowed with mechanical problems as the caution flag waved. While Eckhardt pulled away over the final laps, both Nottestad and Andy Wendt caught Schumacher and all three contenders raced in a tight pack. Nottestad was able to edge to the inside and pass Schumacher in the closing laps to score the championship. Eckhardt drove to the feature win over Nick Wendt and Corso. Chris Ratajczyk finished a strong fourth and Keith crossed the stripe in fifth.

The Limited Late Model fast dash win was captured by Kyle Jarlesberg while Scott Nottestad was the fastest qualifier at 12.441 seconds.

Dale Prunty has been invincible in the Midwest Modified division of late and Sunday night proved to be no exception as he charged to his sixth feature win in a row.

Joe Ottmann led the field to the green flag and he led the first two laps before Wes Biswell drove by on the outside and into the lead. Behind the lead duo, Ron Schmitt, John Kruschel, Jason Feyereisen, and Steve Huelsbeck battled for position until Kruschel broke loose on lap five and spun in turn two. With no other options, both Feyereisen and Huelsbeck piled into Kruschel's machine and the field was slowed under the yellow flag. Biswell led Schmitt and Ottmann as racing resumed while Prunty advanced his way up to fourth place. Prunty took over third place by lap nine and three laps later he used the inside to slide by Schmitt for the second spot exiting turn four. By the time he entered turn one, Prunty was in the outside lane and alongside Biswell for the lead. Biswell held his ground in the inside lane and both drivers race door to door for the lead before Prunty pulled ahead on lap 12. While Prunty led, Biswell did not let him get away and he had enough for a last lap shot at the win. Biswell tried but could not complete a pass for the lead and Prunty took the checkered flag about a half car length ahead of Biswell. Schmitt crossed the stripe in third place while Feyereisen and Ottmann were fourth and fifth respectively.

Huelsbeck was the winner of the Midwest Modified fast dash and Steven Schulz set fast time at 12.341 seconds.

Jake Vanoskey and Miles Dornbrook were the winners of the Slinger Bees races and Steve Fohrer won the Spectator Eliminator races in his new BMW. The late model drivers who have Port-A-John as a sponsor drove the Speedway Guest Cars and Dennis Prunty bested the field to win the event. Donald Van Camp held off Shane Becker to win an exciting Figure 8 race to close the night.
