Lepak Notches Win #2 In Sundance Vacations 65
By Dan Margetta
(Slinger, WI) August 27— Jeremy Lepak notched his second late model feature
win of the season Sunday night at the Slinger Super Speedway, holding off
David Prunty to win the Sundance Vacations 65 and stopping Prunty’s win
streak at three weeks.
“When you’ve got that #1 car (Prunty) coming to you, you’ve always got
to look in the mirror,” Lepak stated from victory lane. “I just tried to
look straight ahead and just do what I had to do and keep my rhythm to keep
this car out front.”
Gary LaMonte and Collin Bamke paced the field at the start and Bamke used the
outside to grab the lead while LaMonte battled with Dennis Prunty and Lepak
for second. Prunty and Lepak both were able to race their way past LaMonte and
a few laps later LaMonte also fell victim to Nick Schumacher and David Prunty.
Bamke began to pull away to a sizeable advantage as Lepak moved into second
place while Dennis Prunty tried to hold off his brother David for third place.
David Prunty advanced to third on lap 24 while Lepak began to slowly close the
distance between him and the leader. By lap 40, Lepak was glued to Bamke’s
rear bumper and after making several looks to the inside, Lepak looked to the
high side and completed the pass on lap 42. Three laps later David Prunty
worked his way by Bamke for second and began to attempt to close on Lepak for
the lead. Lepak caught the tail end of the field and worked the lapped traffic
well to maintain his advantage over David Prunty while Dennis Prunty and Bamke
engaged in a spirited battle for third. Lepak was able to hold David Prunty at
bay and he drove to the win while behind the top two, Bamke edged Dennis
Prunty for third. Nick Schumacher finished fifth while Josh Bauer and Al
Schill were sixth and seventh respectively. John Mueller, Lowell Bennett, and
Chad Barker completed the top ten finishers.
Lepak also was the winner of the 30-lap late model Race of Champions which
consisted of feature winners and fast qualifiers from the season. Dennis
Prunty finished in second place ahead of David Prunty and Al Schill. John
Mueller took the checkered flag in fifth. Scott Schoeni held off Mark Bitzan
to win the 30-lap late model semi-feature. Randy Schuler crossed the finish
line in third while Race McComb and Dan Jung finished in fourth and fifth
respectively. Dennis Prunty won the late model fast dash and David
Prunty was the fastest qualifier at 11.456 seconds.
Jay Shambeau drove to his second feature win of the season in the 30-lap
Midwest Sportsman Series main event.
Corey Funk led the opening laps while Shambeau settled into second place as
Mike Borchardt and Pat McIntee began to work their way forward. Funk led the
first 12 laps before Shambeau made his move, diving to the inside of Funk in
turn four to take command on lap 13. Borchardt used the top side to advance
his way into third place by the halfway mark while McIntee and Mark Kissinger
followed close behind. Borchardt and McIntee were able to race their way into
second and third respectively by lap 18 just before the caution flag appeared
a lap later for debris on the track. Shambeau chose the inside for the restart
while Borchardt worked the top side. Shambeau and Borchardt battled door to
door over the final laps with Shambeau holding the inner lane and Borchardt
remaining tough on the outside. On the final lap, Shambeau charged hard out of
turn two and drifted out front while McIntee quickly filled the inside gap,
kicking Borchardt to third place. Shambeau drove under the checkered flag for
the win while McIntee edged Borchardt for second place. Mike Graczkowski
finished in fourth place while Dave Thomas completed the distance in fifth
place.
Mike Borchardt won the Midwest Sportsman Series fast dash and Mike Graczkowski
turned in a lap at 12.770 seconds to set fast time.
No one has been able to unseat Dale Prunty for a feature win in the Midwest
Modified division lately and Sunday night’s 25-lap main event concluded with
the same results as Prunty won his fifth straight feature.
Joey Bentfield and Wes Biswell led at the green flag and the outside lane
proved to be the quick one as Biswell, Steve Huelsbeck, and Prunty all shot
into the first three spots while Bentfield battled with Steven Schulz and
Jason Feyereisen over the fourth position. Biswell paced the first two laps
before Huelsbeck took to the outside, completing the pass for the lead on lap
three while Prunty also worked the outer groove and worked his way around
Biswell for second place. Huelsbeck showed the way for eight more laps before
Prunty pulled alongside on lap 12. Prunty and Huelsbeck raced side by side
with Prunty working the high side and Huelsbeck staying down low until Prunty
eventually eased ahead with a good run off the corner on lap 14. Matt Pate’s
car suddenly erupted in flames on the frontstretch on lap 16 and the field was
stopped under the red flag as the track was cleaned from the incident. Prunty
chose the inside for the restart and he again shot out front as racing
resumed. Huelsbeck was not as fortunate as he lost ground on the outside as
Biswell, Schulz, and Ron Schmitt all got by to move into the second through
fourth spots. Prunty charged to his fifth straight feature win as Biswell and
Schulz finished second and third respectively. Schmitt came home in the fourth
spot while Jason Feyereisen finished fifth.
Steve Huelsbeck was the winner of the Midwest Modified fast dash and Prunty
was the fastest qualifier at 12.373 seconds.
Al Stippich made a daring three-wide pass on Les Wiedenhoeft and Brad Jakes to
take the lead on lap five and went on to take top honors in the 17-lap
Thunderstock feature. Ryan DeStefano finished in second place ahead of Troy
Martingilio and Rick Schaefer while Aaron Cain took the checkered flag in
fifth.
Bob Losniecki and Travis Buchholz split the victories in the 8-lap Complete
Car Care Slinger Bee events and Bill Ostovich Sr. won the Port-A-John Speedway
Guest Car race. Pat McComb was the winner of the Spectator Eliminator race and
Willie Van Camp topped off the night with a win in the Figure 8 event.
