It's Prunty Again In The Sno-Way 60 At Slinger
By Dan Margetta
(Slinger, WI) August 20—David Prunty racked up his third late model feature
victory in a row Sunday night, surviving a wreck-strewn event to cruise to the
victory at the Slinger Super Speedway.
“We actually didn’t start off that good tonight,” Prunty stated after
crossing the finish line nearly a half lap ahead of his closest competitor.
“But we’re not afraid to adjust on the car and we made all the right
calls, I’ve really got to thank the crew.”
“We’ve just hit on something out here and I think it’s working really
good,” Prunty continued. “I just went right to the outside and I
couldn’t believe how easy it was to pass them on the outside tonight.”
To say the event got off to a rocky start would be an understatement as
contact between Josh Bauer and Gary LaMonte who were running second and third
behind leader Mike Egan, touched off a multi-car incident on lap two as the
field stacked up behind them. The end result was the car of Chad Barker being
too damaged to continue while Lowell Bennett, John Mueller, and Tommy Hromadka
suffered significant damage but not enough to be retired. Egan led
Travis Dassow and Dennis Prunty on the restart but, Mueller’s car didn’t
come up to speed after contact with the car alongside him and once again the
field traffic-jammed behind him. This time, Mike Strupp found himself being
turned into the car of Nick Schumacher before continuing on into the turn one
wall as the incident also collected Fred Winn.
Egan chose the inside for the restart but Dassow used the outer groove to take
command of the race at the drop of the green flag. Dassow led for a few laps
before Egan battled back to retake the lead just before the yellow flag
appeared again on lap seven for debris on the track. As racing resumed, Egan
used the inside lane to keep the lead while Al Schill ducked inside of Dassow
for second. Dassow became caught on the outside as David Prunty, Dennis Prunty,
and Conrad Morgan all worked their way by. Dassow’s misfortunes continued on
lap 15 as he tangled with Pete Wiedmeyer in turn two to draw the fourth
caution flag of the race. This time, Egan once again occupied the inside lane
while Prunty took to the top, having worked his way around Schill for second
place just prior to the yellow flag. Prunty was tough on the outside and he
raced his way into the lead one lap later.
Prunty and Egan began to stretch their margin on the rest of the field as all
eyes were on Al Schill and Dennis Prunty as they staged their own private war
for third place during the race’s middle stages. While David Prunty and Egan
raced unchallenged, Schill and Dennis Prunty charged hard, racing alongside
each other with Schill hugging the inside and Prunty riding the high side.
Dennis Prunty eventually was able to edge ahead to take over third while David
Prunty continued to extend his lead over Egan. David Prunty cruised to the win
over Egan, who turned in his strongest performance to date with a second place
finish. Dennis Prunty held off Schill for third while Josh Bauer finished in
fifth. Conrad Morgan also drove a strong race to finish in sixth ahead
of Rich Loch and Gary LaMonte, who rebounded from his earlier spin to take the
checkered flag in eighth. Matt Kocourek and Fred Winn rounded out the top ten.
Collin Bamke won the 30-lap late model semi-feature over Randy Schuler and
Mike McCabe. Mark Bitzan and Jim Schmittinger finished fourth and fifth
respectively. John Mueller was the winner of the late model fast dash and Matt
Kocourek toured the speedway in 11.392 seconds and was the evening’s fastest
qualifier.
Mike Graczkowski drove to the win in the 30-lap Midwest Sportsman Series
feature, holding off Dave Thomas at the conclusion.
Ryan Zielski led the opening lap before Graczkowski dove to the inside in turn
three to take the lead on lap two. Graczkowski built up a huge lead while Pat
McIntee, Dave Thomas, Brad Keith, and Rob Braun all began to work their way
forward. Graczkowski extended his advantage to about a half lap by lap 20 but
the lead was erased on lap 27 when Troy Weich spun in turn two, bringing out
the caution flag. Graczkowksi wouldn’t be denied and he jumped out to the
lead again as racing resumed. McIntee battled with Thomas for second place
while Keith muscled his way into third place with an aggressive move on Braun.
On the final lap, McIntee experienced mechanical problems and slowed while
Graczkowksi took the win over Thomas. Keith finished third while McIntee
brought his ailing machine home in fourth place. Jimmie Evans finished fifth.
Rob Braun was the winner of the Midwest Sportsman Series fast dash and Keith
was the fastest qualifier at 12.786 seconds.
Kris Kelly topped the limited late model 30-lap feature, taking the victory
ahead of Nick Schumacher and Jerry Eckhardt.
Eckhardt led the opening laps over Kelly and Andy Wendt as numerous incidents
of bumper tag scattered the field twice in the first ten laps as the race
remained green. Eckhardt maintained his lead over Kelly as the leaders
approached lapped traffic. Kelly tried to use the lapped traffic as a pick in
an effort to get by Eckhardt, but Eckhardt would have none of it, dicing
to the inside to split the lapped cars and keep his lead. While Eckhardt and
Kelly raced for the lead, Andy Wendt and Jeff Steenbergen closed in to make it
a four-car battle for the lead. A spin by Joel Laufer in turn two drew the
caution flag on lap 19 and Eckhardt chose the inside lane for the restart.
Kelly took to the outside and got the jump as the green flag flew to take the
top spot on lap 20. With Kelly out front, Wendt began to pressure Eckhardt for
second place as Steenbergen became caught on the outside as Nick Schumacher
and Jon Reynolds Jr. both made their way around. Another caution flag on lap
26 for an incident between Laufer and Dave McCardle slowed the field. Kelly
kept his lead on the restart as Wendt dove to the inside of Eckhardt in a bid
for second place. After passing Eckhardt, Wendt drifted high in turn two
before looping around on the backstretch where he was clobbered by Reynolds
and the race was slowed again. Kelly drove the final two laps flawlessly and
took the win over Schumacher while Eckhardt, Brad Keith, and Steenbergen
charged three-wide to the checkered flag. Eckhardt finished in third place
just ahead of Keith and Steenbergen.
Nick Wendt was the winner of the limited late model fast dash and Jon Reynolds
Jr. set fast time at 12.418 seconds.
Dale Prunty and Steve Huelsbeck mirrored their battle for the track
championship as they fought for the victory in the 25-lap Midwest Modified
feature as Prunty came away with the win.
The outside lane edged ahead on the start as Huelsbeck took the top spot over
Prunty, Biswell, and Jason Feyereisen. Prunty took to the outside while
Huelsbeck held the inside as the two raced side-by-side for the lead.
Huelsbeck was able to maintain the lead as Prunty continued to apply the
pressure from the outside. Joey Bentfield spun into the turn three wall on lap
15 to bring out the caution flag as Huelsbeck and Prunty continued their
battle as racing resumed. Prunty kept to the outside and began to slowly inch
ahead as Huelsbeck continued to race on the inside. Prunty took the lead on
lap 18 and charged ahead to take the win. Huelsbeck finished a strong second
while Wes Biswell and Ron Schmitt finished third and fourth respectively.
Jason Feyereisen finished fifth.
Steve Huelsbeck won the Midwest Modified fast dash and Prunty set fast time at
12.388 seconds.
Tom Berens and Joseph Koncriach each won Slinger Bee events and Phil Ostovich
won the Port-A-John Speedway Guest Car race. Wayne Ennis was the winner of the
Spectator Eliminator event and Shane Becker closed the evening with a win in
the Figure 8 race.
