David Prunty Nets Second Feature Win At Slinger
By Dan Margetta

(Slinger, WI) Aug. 6— David Prunty took another step towards his first track championship as the current point leader charged to his second feature win of the season in the Great Lakes Underground Equipment Company 65 Sunday night at the Slinger Super Speedway.

“It was hot out there tonight,” Prunty exclaimed from victory lane. “I’m not going to take these wins for granted anymore, this is only our second one this season…they sure don’t come easy.”

Chad Barker paced the early laps over Mike Egan and Dennis Prunty and John Mueller while David Prunty, Al Schill, and Lowell Bennett looked for ways to advance forward. Dennis Prunty moved into second place by lap five and began to pressure Barker for the top spot. The hard racing between the two resulted in Barker spinning in turn two on lap seven, forcing both drivers to restart from the back of the pack as the caution flag waved. The leader’s misfortune, handed the lead to Mike Egan who chose the inside lane for the restart, leaving Mueller to deal with the outside.

Egan pulled away as racing resumed while Schill worked his way into second place two laps before the yellow flag appeared again when Travis Dassow spun while racing with Josh Bauer.  Egan lined up on the inside for the restart and Schill flanked him as the green flag waved and Schill used the ouside to grab the lead on lap 13. Behind the front two, Bennett and David Prunty managed their way around Mueller to take over third and fourth place respectively.  Three laps later, Prunty charged his way first around Bennett and then made his way by Egan and into second place. Prunty then edged alongside Schill and the two raced door to door for five laps before Prunty prevailed just before the 25-lap mark. Once out front, Prunty streaked away from the field while Schill fell into a battle for second with Bennett while Egan and Mueller disputed the fourth spot. A final caution flag flew on lap 49 after Rich Loch spun on the frontstretch while battling with Mike Strupp, leaving a 15 lap sprint for the finish with Prunty choosing the inside line and Bennett taking to the top side.

Prunty and Bennett both were on their marks for the restart, but Prunty proved to be too much on the inside and he retained the top spot. Behind them, Mueller advanced forward to race hard with Schill for third and Dennis Prunty worked his way ahead from the back of the field to fight for the fifth spot with Egan. Prunty drove flawlessly over the final laps and scored his second late model feature win of the season over Bennett. Schill edged Mueller for third place while Dennis Prunty charged to a fifth place result.

Robert Maynor put together a strong run to nail down the victory in the 30-lap late model semi-feature over Randy Schuler and Jim Schmittinger. Scott Schoeni and Race McComb rounded out the top five.  Bennett was the winner of the fast dash and David Prunty set fast time at 11.403 seconds.

Mike Borchardt Jr. raced to his first career Midwest Sportsman Series feature win, leading the final 16 laps en route to the victory.

Corey Funk launched into the lead at the start while Borchardt fell into line in second place. A quick caution flag on lap five for a Mike Graczkowski spin  in turn two, slowed the field but Funk was able to maintain his lead as racing resumed. Funk’s outstanding run took a turn for the worse on lap 14 when he blew a right rear tire and spun in turn two while leading, forcing cars behind him to take evasive action. The incident collected the cars of Chris Beine and Dean Olla as they were the only two drivers unable to continue. Funk’s misfortune left Borchardt with the lead for the restart over Jay Shambeau and Ryan Zielski. Another quick caution flag for Nathan Fick’s spin following a cut tire on lap 16 temporarily slowed the field, but as racing resumed, Borchardt maintained the top spot over Shambeau and Zielski. Brad Keith, Rob Braun, and Dave Thomas entered the fray as they ran side-by-side with Shambeau and Zielski while Borchardt pulled away. Borchardt could not be caught in the waning laps and he raced to his first career feature win while Shambeau edged Braun for second place. Zielski wrapped up one of his best races with a fourth place finish and Thomas completed the top five finshers.

Brad Keith was the winner of the Midwest Sportsman Series fast dash and Pat McIntee was the fastest qualifer at 12.681 seconds.

Earlier, Brad Keith charged to an exciting win in the 30-lap limited late model feature over Nick and Andy Wendt.

Nick Wendt paced the opening laps over Jeff Steenbergen and Andy Wendt while Keith, Jon Reynolds Jr., and Scott Nottestad raced behind them. Steenbergen worked the outside in an attempt to take the lead, but he drifted wide on lap ten and fell back three spots, allowing Andy Wendt and Keith to race by. Keith began to pressure Andy Wendt for second place, pushing to the inside on lap 24 with Reynolds right behind them. As Keith and Wendt went into the corner, Wendt skated up the track allowing Keith to move alongside, as Reynolds took to the top-side, trying to pass them both. By the time all three made it down the backstretch, Keith was able to prevail ahead of Wendt and Reynolds, while Nick Wendt continued to lead. Once into second place, Keith tracked down Nick Wendt and took command of the race by using the high line on lap 26. Keith raced to the win ahead of Nick Wendt while Andy Wendt finished in third place. Reynolds finished in fourth place and Steenbergen rebounded for a fifth place finish.

Andy Wendt won the limited late model dash and Scott Nottestad was the fastest qualifier at 12.473 seconds.

Dale Prunty was on the marks for a green-white-checkered restart and led the final two circuits to win the 25-lap Midwest Modified feature.

John Kruschel led the field to the green flag and quickly established himself as the early leader while Jason Feyereisen worked the outside lane in second place. Ron Schmitt, Dale Prunty, and Steve Huelsbeck raced in formation behind the top duo while Kruschel continued to lead. Feyereisen’s attempts on the outside eventually began to fade as Schmitt, Prunty, and Wes Biswell worked the inside and into second through fourth place respectively. Kruschel was able to maintain his lead as Prunty moved around Schmitt for second place after dispatching Biswell for third. Feyereisen and Huelsbeck became hooked together on lap 23 with the end result being Huelsbeck smacking the frontstretch wall and bringing out the caution. Kruschel chose the inside for the restart but he was no match for Prunty, who charged into the lead as racing resumed. Biswell also made his way around Kruschel and tried to catch Prunty for the lead. Prunty charged ahead and took the win over Biswell while Kruschel finished in third place. Ron Schmitt and Joe Ostermann completed the top five finishers.

Jason Feyereisen won the Midwest Modified dash and Dale Prunty toured the speedway in 12.273 seconds and was the fastest qualifier.

Tom Berens aggressively won the opening Complete Car Care Slinger Bee race while Desi Wiedenhoeft outraced the field to win the second Complete Car Care Slinger Bee event. Jim Rient was the winner of the Port-A-John Speedway Guest Car race and Carl Trapp won the Spectator Eliminator race in his 1972 Chevy Nova. Shane Becker closed the night with a win in the Figure 8 event.
