Schill Scores Win #3 In Pepsi Challenge Round One Presented By Arby's
By Dan Margetta

(Slinger, WI) June 4— 61-year old veteran Al Schill took the late model feature field to school Sunday night at the Slinger Super Speedway, charging to his third win of the season in the 75-lap Round One of the Pepsi Challenge Series presented by Arby’s.

“I’ve been sticking with this car since 1997 and it’s proved to be a good one,” Schill explained from victory lane. “Time will tell if I still got another championship in me but it looks like I might have some more left in me.”

Travis Dassow shot into the lead at the start with John Mueller and Josh Bauer falling in line behind him as Jim Schmittinger, Gary LaMonte, and Nick Schumacher battled over the fourth position. An incident between Ken Wills and Dennis Prunty in turn one on lap two produced the caution flag with Dassow leading Mueller and Bauer. It didn’t take long for the action to heat up again as right after racing resumed, contact between Schmittinger and Mike Strupp in turn three blocked the track. Having no where to go, Chad Barker, Mike Egan, and Conrad Morgan became swept up in the incident with Morgan’s car resting on top of Egan and Strupp’s machines, necessitating a red flag.

With the track cleared and the green flag out again, Dassow worked the inside lane and fended off numerous challenges by Mueller as Bauer lurked close behind. Mueller held tough on the outside before gradually falling back as Bauer moved into second place by lap 10, bringing Schill and Lowell Bennett along with him into third and fourth place respectively. Bauer closed to Dassow’s rear bumper by lap 15 and also looked to the outside in a bid for the lead, racing alongside Dassow for three laps before easing in front on lap 18. Schill also caught Dassow and used the outside to advance to second place a few laps later, setting his sights on Bauer for the lead.

Schill tracked Bauer down by lap 30 and also used  the high line to race his way into the lead on lap 32 and a few laps later, Bennett also made his way around Bauer and into second place. Further back, brothers David and Dennis Prunty edged their way forward, entering the top five in fourth and fifth respectively by passing Dassow and Mueller by lap 40.

Once out front, Schill extended his lead and was never seriously challenged, racing to a fifteen car-length victory over Bennett and Bauer. David Prunty finished in fourth place just ahead of Dennis Prunty in fifth. John Mueller took the checkered flag in sixth place while Nick Schumacher, Gary LaMonte, Tommy Pecaro, and Ken Wills rounded out the top ten.

Dale Prunty took top honors in the 30-lap late model semi-feature over Chad Barker and Race McComb. Mark Bitzan finished in fourth place and Tommy Hromadka was fifth. Shawn Roethle was the winner of the 12-lap late model consi over Chris Blawat and Jim Jesoshek. Ron Ragan and John Nelson were fourth and fifth respectively. Josh Bauer won the fast dash and David Prunty bested the 36 cars that took qualifying runs with a lap of 11.359 seconds.

James Swan drove to a dominating win in the 40-lap Midwest Sportsman feature over Pat McIntee and Brad Keith.

Jeff Holtz led the opening lap before he experienced mechanical problems and drifted high in turn four and stalled to bring out the caution flag with Brad Keith taking over the top spot. Mike Borchardt held down the second slot followed by Scott Ascher, Pat McIntee, and Swan as the green flag reappeared. Keith maintained the top spot while Swan began to march forward, moving into second place by lap 17. Swan then drove around Keith for the lead on lap 19 and began to stretch away from the field. McIntee was the driver on the move during the middle stages, passing Ascher for third place by lap 25 and then tracking down Keith for second four laps later. Swan’s advantage grew to nearly a straightaway over the final laps and he cruised to the win. McIntee finished a strong second and Keith crossed the stripe in third. Mike Graczkowski maneuvered his way around Ascher to take fourth place while Ascher took the checkered flag in fifth.

Corey Funk won the 15-lap Midwest Sportsman semi-feature over Jimmy Evans and Scott Shambeau. Andy Haver finished fourth and Tom Elsinger was fifth. Scott Ascher was the winner of the fast dash and James Swan set fast time at 12.607 seconds.

Wes Biswell led wire to wire to capture the victory in the 20-lap Midwest Modified feature, holding off Ron Schmitt and Dale Prunty at the finish.

Biswell and Joe Houpt led the field to the green flag and Biswell quickly established himself as the leader while Prunty moved up from the fourth starting spot to take second. Ron Schmitt grabbed the third spot while Houpt, Jason Feyereisen, and Steve Holzhausen disputed the fourth position. With Biswell maintaining his lead, Schmitt caught Prunty and began to pressure him for second, taking over the position on lap six while Holzhausen advanced to fourth place ahead of Feyereisen. Schmitt caught Biswell in the closing laps and looked outside numerous times but was unable to make a pass and Biswell charged to the win. Schmitt finished in second place and Prunty came home in third. Huelsbeck and Feyereisen rounded out the top five.

Feyereisen won the Midwest Modified fast dash and Huelsbeck turned in a lap of 12.481 seconds and was the night’s fastest qualifier.

Al Stippich won the Thunderstocks feature event over Ryan DeStefano and Dustin Krebs. Rick Schaefer was fourth and Jim Bentzler finished fifth. Bob Losiniecki and Travis Buccholz split the Slinger Bees races and John Schmidt was the winner of the Port-A-John Speedway Guest Car event. Russ Lorbecki won the Spectator Eliminator race and Jeff Wohlrabe closed the night with a win in the Figure 8 event.
