Slinger Speedway Driver of the Week

Al Schill is this weeks Slinger Speedway Driver of the Week!  With a win in the first race of the Miller Lite Twin 75’s and a 4th place finish this past week, Al is looking to knock Brad Mueller from the championship reign.  Al will be riding a full season with his brand new Ford Fusion, 351-Engine, left-hander chassis.  Al and his crew worked very hard this off-season to make improvements to a brand new 2006 Ford.  So far, those improvements have paid off and with new motivation; Al is looking like a champion once again.

Since his racing years began in 1966, Al has so many memories to share he is not sure what sticks out the most.  He is very proud for winning every race on the schedule and winning championships that his new focus is the Slinger Nationals.  Al has yet to claim victory in this event even though he has come so close many times.  During his run of 5 consecutive championships from 1984-1988, he finished 2nd twice and lead laps but failed to finish several races due to mechanical problems.  He is very proud of his bounty victory when during a time when Tony Strupp won over 10 races in a row.  This happened in the mid 1990’s.  He his also very proud of his consecutive winning races of 13 in a row before being ousted by Jerry Eckhardt.

Al would like to thank Waste Management, Champion Chicken, Jung Brothers trucking, Leo’s Upper Dell’s Bar, Barkers Reconditioning, Structural Transport, and Al’s Auto Salvage and Sales for their continued support with his race team.  Al would also like to thank his Wife Gwen, daughters Jenny and Kim, his son-in-laws Norman and Jeff, his crew members Al, Duane, Tommy, Herb, and Mark for all their support and trust in him throughout his racing career.

Al does have some advice to newer drivers or rookies in the Late Model division or even starting in their first race in the Slinger Bees division.  “This track is so demanding and physical, that gaining experience at lower classes and getting advice from some veterans will help you stay out of trouble.  You need a good spotter and an excellent head on your shoulders.”

When asked about ever moving up his skills into NASCAR Al’s response was, “ever since I took over my family business in 1970, that option was never available.”  Al has been racing since 1974 at Slinger Speedway and has no plans to retire anytime soon!  Al is the only one to have ever won 5 consecutive championships at Slinger Speedway.
