Meulemans Wins Spectator 200, Berndt Scores Win In Compact 100 At Slinger

Slinger, WI-Sept. 18—Jason and Jeff Meulemans became the first father-son
tandem to sweep the top two finishing positions in the Spectator 200 Sunday
afternoon at the Slinger Super Speedway with Jason scoring the victory over
his father, Jeff.
“I watched my dad do this for many years,” Jason Meulemans declared
following the event. “This is the first time I’ve beat him in a full
enduro car.”
Meulemans hovered around the top five throughout the 200 lap event, working
his way up to second place at the halfway mark as Mark Fogel dominated the
early stages, leading from lap 30 until he spun in turn four while leading on
lap 119. Les Weidenhoeft took over the lead soon thereafter and continued to
show the way until Muelemans took command of the event for good on lap 140.
Jeff Meulemans also stayed at or near the top five for the entire event and
made his charge in the later stages, moving into second place on lap 150.
Jason Muelemans remained out front and charged to the victory as Jeff
Muelemans crossed the line in second place. Weidenhoeft took the checkered
flag in third place while Fogel rebounded from his spin to finish fourth. Tom
Carr finished in fifth place.
Dave Berndt dominated the Compact 100 event for compact cars for the third
year in a row, taking top honors over Matt Schatz.
“There were lots of fast cars out there today,” Berndt told the crowd from
victory lane. “I was able to get by some of them and the others, I just spun
out. It was fun,”
Justin Poenitsch led the opening laps while Berndt worked his way forward to
take third place behind Schatz on lap ten. The red flag appeared on lap 14
when Jake Larson rolled his car on its roof on the frontstretch following a
multi-car tangle. As racing resumed, Berndt moved forward and took the lead on
lap 20. Once out front, Berndt never looked back and nearly lapped the field,
taking the victory over Schatz. Tony Rick finished in third place and Jacob
Vanoskey and Steve Paukner rounded out the top five. Tom Berens and Jim Brooks
provided much of the late race entertainment as they repeatedly bounced off
each other, trying their best to duplicate Dale Jarret and Ryan Newman’s
NASCAR Bristol incident from earlier in the year. For the record, at the
checkered flag, both Berens and Brooks ended their race against the turn three
wall.
