Win Number Two For Schill In Milwaukee Electric Tool 60
By Dan Margetta
Slinger, WI-August 7 - Al Schill charged to his second feature win of the
season Sunday night at the Slinger Super Speedway as he turned back the
challenges of Lowell Bennett and David Prunty to win the Milwaukee Electric
Tool 60.
"Lowell (Bennett) and I have done many races like that through the
years," Schill told the crowd, explaining his battle with Bennett for the
win. "We just raced clean and we'll have a good time afterwards and talk
about the great side by side racing on a short track like this."
Dennis Prunty outgunned Ken Wills into turn one at the start to take command
of the event while Schill used the inside to slip into second place, bringing
Travis Dassow, Bennett, and David Prunty with him. Dennis Prunty and Schill
began to pull away while Bennett went to work on Dassow for third. After
making numerous attempts to the inside, Bennett finally looked on the high
side and took the position by lap ten. A few laps later, David Prunty was also
able to make a move around Dassow to claim fourth. The advantage Dennis Prunty
and Schill gained was eliminated on lap 22, as the caution flew for a spin by
Dan Jung in turn four.
Schill made an attempt to gain the lead on the restart, but Prunty was ready
for him and kept his car glued to the inside lane. With the top five remaining
static, the action began to heat up further back as John Mueller and Rich Loch
ran numerous laps side-by-side in a clean tussle for the eighth position. On
lap 34, Mueller's car kicked loose in turn four and came around, taking Loch's
car with him as the two slid along the frontstretch wall, bringing out the
caution flag for a second time.
This time, Schill timed his restart perfectly and was able to get a run on
Prunty as they headed into turn one. By the time they exited turn two, Schill
was able to inch the nose of his car to the inside of Prunty and draw
alongside. Prunty proved tough on the outside lane but eventually Schill
prevailed to take the top spot on lap 36 while Bennett quickly filled the
inside gap and pulled alongside Prunty. With Schill steadily pulling away,
Prunty and Bennett then battled alongside each other over second with Bennett
holding the inside and Prunty remaining stout on the high side. The battle for
second was both hard and aggressive and it resulted in Prunty's car looping
around in turn four on lap 43 to put the field under caution again with Schill
leading Bennett, David Prunty, Dassow, and Brad Mueller.
Schill and Bennett put on a classic battle over the final laps with Bennett
able to close entering the corners and Schill proving stronger upon the exits.
With Bennett and third place David Prunty glued to his bumper, Schill remained
smooth and took the checkered flag a car length ahead them. Bennett settled
for a second place finish while David Prunty crossed the finish line a close
third. Brad Mueller was able to pass Dassow late in the race to post a fourth
place finish, while Dassow settled for fifth.
Donavan Morgan won the 30-lap late model semi-feature and transferred into the
main event along with second place finisher Fred Winn. Dave Teske, Tommy
Hromadka, and Randy Schuler completed the top five.
Dave Feiler won the dash and David Prunty was the fastest qualifier at 11.472
seconds.
Collin Bamke scored his second feature victory of the season by slicing
through the field to claim the 30-lap Midwest Sportsman main event.
Mike Graczkowski led the opening laps as Dave Thomas, Brad Keith, and Pat
McIntee followed. Bamke jumped into fifth at the start as the front-runners
ran in a pack with Graczkowski hanging onto the lead. Graczkowski's race came
to an end on lap six as smoke poured from his car, sending him into the pits
and handing the lead to Thomas. Keith took over second place with McIntee,
Bamke, and Rob Braun all looking for a way by. Keith tried the outside lane in
a bid for the lead but was unable to make the pass which allowed McIntee to
use the inside to get second place by lap 15. After numerous attempts to root
Thomas from the inside lane, McIntee also looked to the outside and with Keith
also in the top lane, Bamke quickly dove to the inside and moved from fourth
place into a side by side battle with McIntee for second. Bamke made the move
stick by lap 20 and grabbed second, leaving McIntee and Keith to race with
James Swan and Gary LaMonte who advanced forward into the top five. Once clear
of traffic, Bamke ran down Thomas and he also looked to the outside lane to
find a way to the lead. On lap 25, Bamke made the top groove work and he
motored around Thomas and into the lead. Bamke pulled away over the final five
laps and scored his second win of the season. Thomas finished in second place
ahead of Swan and LaMonte who got around McIntee for third and fourth place.
McIntee was victorious in the Midwest Sportsman dash and LaMonte continued to
dominate qualifying, setting fast time at 12.603 seconds.
Andy Wendt held off the challenges of Ryan Carlson to win the Eldorado Trailer
Sales Limited Late Model 40-lap feature.
Wendt started from the outside of the front row and charged into the lead at
the start over Aaron Falbe and Kyle Jarlesberg. Jerry Eckhardt and Chris
Ratajczyk began to move through the field, entering the top five along with
Dylan Schuyler by the fifth lap, just before the caution flew for a David
Serchuck spin in turn one. Wendt continued to lead over Falbe on the restart
as Eckhardt moved into third place while Carlson began to march forward,
taking fifth place from Schuyler by lap ten. Carlson then overtook Jarlesberg
for the fourth spot as Wendt remained out front. A spin by Jon Reynolds Jr. in
turn two on lap 18 brought out the caution flag again with Wendt leading Falbe,
Carlson, and Eckhardt. As racing resumed, Carlson drew alongside Falbe and
took over second place. Carlson then began to track down Wendt who had gained
a sizeable lead by lap 30. A spin by Tyler James on lap 34 set up a six-lap
charge to the finish as Carlson closed on Wendt for the restart. Wendt was on
the money for the final laps and held off Carlson for the win. Eckhardt
finished a strong third while Ratajczyk advanced late in the race to come home
in fourth. Falbe took the checkered flag in fifth.
Eckhardt was the winner of the Eldorado Trailer Sales Limited Late Model dash
and Jon Reynolds Jr. paced qualifying at 12.403 seconds.
Dale Prunty charged to the win in the 25-lap Midwest Modified feature, taking
the checkered flag about four car lengths ahead of Steven Schulz.
Russ Moberly and Eddie Bentfield led the field to the green and Moberly used
the inside to gain the top spot while Russ Grade slipped into second, dropping
Bentfield to third. Moberly led the opening lap as Grade made the move to the
inside in a bid for the lead and the ensuing contact resulted in Moberly
spinning and Grade ending up parked on top of Moberly's machine while the
caution flag waved. Bentfield inherited the lead for the restart and he led
the second lap before once again, the caution flew as David McCardle and Jason
Feyereisen tangled in turn one, leaving McCardle spun around at the inside of
the track.
Bentfield maintained his lead on the restart over Prunty and Schulz while
Steve Huelsbeck and Ron Schmitt followed. Prunty worked over Bentfield for the
lead on lap six and Schulz followed a lap later to claim second. Huelsbeck and
Schmitt also were able to pass Bentfield a few laps later as Schulz looked to
the inside and outside for a way around Prunty for the lead. Bentfield held on
to the fifth spot until lap 22 when he spun in turn four, moving Feyereisen
and Wes Biswell into a battle for the spot. Prunty stayed smooth over the
closing laps and held off Schulz for the win. Huelsbeck finished in third
place and Schmitt crossed the stripe in fourth place. The battle between
Feyereisen and Biswell boiled over on the final corner and they tangled on the
frontstretch, allowing Bill Tandetzke to finish fifth.
Earlier in the evening, Russ Grade won the fast dash and Steven Schulz set
fast time after turning in a qualifying lap of 12.319 seconds.
Joe DeStefano Jr. claimed top honors in the 12-lap Thunderstock main event,
taking the victory over Jim Bentzler and Chris Beine. Ryan DeStefano and Andy
Okrasinski rounded out the top five finishers. C.J. Corallini was the winner
of the first Slinger Bee race after Jamie Vetter and Desi Weidenhoeft tangled
while racing for the win and Steve Paukner edged Scott Bundy to win the second
Slinger Bee event. Ed Wagner won the Port-A-John Speedway Guest Car race and
Jack Sutherland drove his Camaro to the win in the Spectator Eliminator race.
Donald Van Camp closed the night with a victory in the Figure 8 race.
