Feiler Nets First Victory Of The Season In Miller/Bon Jovi 70
By Dan Margetta
Slinger, WI-July 31—Dave Feiler found victory lane for the first time this
season as he took top honors in the 70-lap late model feature Sunday night at
the Slinger Super Speedway on Miller Bon Jovi Night.
While Feiler’s car wasn’t perfect, he took advantage of a slip by Mike
Egan on lap 55 to gain the lead and then had enough to hold off Egan for the
victory.
“We experienced a little bit of trouble with the rear-end and I couldn’t
get on the gas like I wanted,” Feiler explained to the crowd. “I really
had to take it easy on the car because it really wasn’t like I wanted it
tonight but that’s the way my year’s been going. The car wasn’t that
good but I could still win the race.”
“I could see he (Egan) was loosening up and as we got to lapped traffic I
was kind of reeling him in,” Feiler continued, describing the winning move
which occurred exiting turn two when Egan’s car broke loose on lap 55.
The race got off to a tough start as a multi-car accident on the frontstretch
at the completion of the first lap constituted a red flag situation and action
was stopped while the track was cleared. The melee began when John Mueller
spun on the straightaway while running fourth and with the frontstretch
blocked, cars began piling into the fracas resulting in severe damage to the
cars of Al Schill, David Prunty, Travis Dassow, Mark Bitzan, and Robert Maynor.
Once racing resumed Egan and Feiler maintained the top two spots throughout
the event with Egan leading the first ten laps while Feiler desperately tried
to turn under him in a bid to take the lead. When the inside moves didn’t
work, Feiler took to the outside, pulling alongside Egan on lap nine and
taking the top spot on the next circuit. Egan kept Feiler in his sights and
when Feiler bobbled in turn two on lap 35, he quickly pounced on the situation
and regained the top spot. Feiler then stalked Egan for a number of laps
before Egan’s slip-up cost him the lead on lap 55.
Egan turned in his best performance of the season, leading early on and then
working his way by Feiler on the outside to lead laps 36-54 before finishing a
season-best second place. Dennis Prunty rebounded from his troubles a week ago
to come home with a third place finish ahead of Lowell Bennett and Brad
Mueller who finished fourth and fifth respectively. A spin by Fred Winn on the
final lap forced the race to end under the caution flag.
Nick Schumacher finished in sixth place ahead of John Mueller and Ken Wills.
Mike Strupp and Randy Schuler completed the top ten finishers.
Scott Schoeni won the 30-lap semi-feature over Brad Bennett and Ron Ragan.
Race McComb and George Olson rounded out the top five. Dennis Prunty won the
fast dash while Brad Mueller set fast time at 11.455 seconds.
James Swan drove to the win in the 40-lap Midwest Sportsman feature which was
part of the Midwest Sportsman Championship Series.
Jan Kantner and John Fiorita paced the field at the green flag as Kantner led
the opening lap before giving way to Fiorita when he broke loose in turn two
on the second lap. Kantner then spun in turn four and the field was slowed
under the yellow flag with Fiorita leading John Senercia, Kenny Joosten, and
Swan. The top five remained static on the restart and a lap later, the yellow
appeared again when Dean Olla experienced mechanical problems on the
frontstretch and Dave Obermeyer spun in an attempt to avoid him. Before the
incident was over, Corey Funk also spun in attempt to avoid everything and
collided with Obermeyer’s car just under the flagstand.
Fiorita led as racing resumed with Senercia pressuring him while Swan made his
way around Joosten for third. Senercia’s efforts paid off by lap ten as he
took command of the race, dropping Fiorita back into a battle with Swan and
Joosten for second while Brad Keith entered the top five. Swan and Joosten
were able to get by Fiorita by lap 16 and two laps later they caught Senercia
for the top spot. Swan took the lead on lap 18 and began to draw away while
Joosten and Keith went to work on Senercia for second. Swan extended his lead
by the halfway point while Joosten and Keith forced Senercia to the outside
and moved into second and third respectively. Swan was unchallenged throughout
the second half and cruised to the victory over Joosten and Keith. Senercia
finished in fourth place and Fiorita crossed the stripe in fifth.
Swan won the fast dash and Gary LaMonte continued to dominate qualifying,
setting fast time with a lap of 12.627 seconds.
Steve Schulz took the lead early and then held off a hard charging Jason
Feyereisen to win the 25-lap Midwest Modified feature.
Ron Schmitt and Schulz led the field to the green flag and Schulz used the
outside lane to gain the top spot upon the completion of lap two. Schmitt
stuck with the bottom while Feyereisen also looked to the top as they battled
for second with Schulz remaining out front. Dale Prunty and Steve Huelsbeck
followed close behind the lead trio as the top five ran nose to tail. A spin
by David McCardle in turn three on lap eight produced the first and only
caution flag of the race with Schulz leading Feyereisen, Schmitt, and Prunty.
Schulz and Feyereisen were ready for the restart and they got a slight jump as
racing resumed, pulling away from Schmitt, Prunty, and Huelsbeck. By lap 15,
Schulz still led Feyereisen who looked both high and low for way around while
Prunty tracked them down, setting up a three-car battle for the lead. As the
top three fought for position, Schmitt and Huelsbeck also staged a tussle for
the fourth spot. Schulz hit his marks over the final laps and was able to hold
off Feyereisen for the win by about a car-length. Prunty finished a close
third while Schmitt edged Huelsbeck at the stripe to finish fourth, leaving
Huelsbeck to settle for fifth.
Schmitt was the winner of the fast dash and Feyereisen was the fastest
qualifier of the evening, turning in a lap of 12.241 seconds.
Eric Schuetz scored his first career Slinger victory by taking the checkered
flag first in the 12-lap Thunderstock feature. Rick Schaefer finished second
ahead of Joe DeStefano Sr., Chris Beine, and Andy Okrasinski. Ryan Zielski and
Bill Walsh each took home wins in Slinger Bees events and Pam Netteshiem won
the Port-A-John Speedway Guest Car race. Pat McComb topped the Spectator
Elimination races in his 1985 Chevy Monte Carlo and Scott Goetzke closed the
night by winning the Figure 8 event.
