David Prunty Tops Ritter-Parker Store 75
By Dan Margetta
Slinger, WI-July 24—David Prunty scored his third win of the season Sunday
night at the Slinger Super Speedway as he held off Brad Mueller and Lowell
Bennett to win the Ritter-Parker Store 75-lap late model feature.
“This was a totally different car tonight than I’ve had all year,”
Prunty told the crowd from victory lane. “I’ve got to thank the crew who
stayed up until three in the morning yesterday to get it to turn so well.”
Donavan Morgan drove his dad’s familiar #92 and led the field to the green
flag along with Ken Wills. Morgan immediately charged into the lead from the
inside groove with Dennis Prunty, Brad Mueller, and David Prunty following to
take the top positions. Morgan began to edge ahead while Mueller looked for a
way around Dennis Prunty just before the caution flag flew on lap 23 when
Scott Schoeni spun in turn four.
Morgan once again eased ahead of the field on the restart while Mueller began
to look both high and low for a way around Dennis for second as David Prunty
and Lowell Bennett lined up directly behind them. Mueller eventually chose the
high side and was able to pull alongside Dennis for a few laps but was unable
to complete the pass as Dennis used all the available space on the inside
lane. Mueller’s move was costly as David was able to edge his nose to the
inside and take over the third position by lap 30. Once around Mueller, David
went to work on his brother, staying glued to Dennis’ back bumper, trying to
find a way around on the inside. David took to the outer groove on lap 40 and
was able to draw alongside down the backstretch. When the brothers got to the
third turn, David suddenly ran out of room and was forced to back off,
prompting track officials to show Dennis the black flag for failing to stay in
his lane.
“I think he (Dennis) doesn’t understand where the lanes are,” David
joked following the event as his brother congratulated him in victory lane.
“Dennis likes to race me harder than anybody else, but I’m used to it.”
With the departure of Dennis Prunty, David advanced into second place with
Mueller holding down third over Bennett and Dave Feiler while Morgan’s
advantage out front grew. The lead cars began to run nose to tail and in doing
so, Prunty and Mueller were able to track down Morgan, closing the gap by lap
46. Morgan’s car began to push high off the turns and that allowed Prunty to
pass him to take the lead just before lap 50. Mueller repeated the move a few
laps later while Bennett and Feiler also followed suit as Morgan became caught
in the outside lane. By the time Mueller cleared Morgan for second, Prunty had
built up a sizeable lead and appeared to be on his way to an easy victory when
a Gregg Haase spin on lap 70 produced a caution flag that set up a five lap
sprint to the finish.
Prunty was ready for the restart but so was Mueller and he stayed in
Prunty’s tire tracks as racing resumed. Mueller dogged Prunty over the final
laps but Prunty was too strong exiting the turns and he drove to his third win
of the season. Mueller was forced to settle for the runner-up position for the
second week in a row while Bennett took the flag in third place. Feiler
finished a much-needed strong run with a fourth place finish and Austin
Konetski was fifth. Morgan came home in sixth place at the finish ahead of
Nick Schumacher and Travis Dassow while John Mueller and Ken Wills rounded out
the top ten.
Scott Schoeni held off Randy Schuler to win the 30-lap late model
semi-feature. Jerry Eckhardt finished in third place and Ron Ragan and Jim
Jesowshek were fourth and fifth respectively. Dennis Prunty won the fast dash
and Feiler set fast time on the night at 11.524 seconds.
Pat McIntee took home top honors in the 30-lap Midwest Sportsman feature,
taking the checkered flag ahead of Gary LaMonte and Collin Bamke.
McIntee started third and followed pole-sitter Gary Tisler for a lap before
completing the pass for the lead on lap two. Behind the lead duo, Brad Keith
led James Swan and Dave Thomas as they disputed the third spot just ahead of
Bamke and LaMonte. The yellow flag flew on lap seven when Jan Kantner spun in
turn one with McIntee leading Tisler, Keith, and Swan.
McIntee maintained his lead on the restart while Keith and Swan ducked inside
of Tisler to take over second and third respectively. LaMonte began his charge
to the front, using the inside lane to pick off cars and moving into third
place by the halfway point. LaMonte was pressuring Keith for second when
the yellow flag appeared again for fluid on the track following Mike
Graczkowski’s mechanical problems on lap 17. On the restart, McIntee
continued to lead as LaMonte looked for a way around Keith. After numerous
looks to the inside, LaMonte tried the top groove but couldn’t make it work
as he lost ground to McIntee and Keith. McIntee was never headed and as the
white flag was displayed, LaMonte dove to the inside of Keith to take second
place. McIntee drove to the win while LaMonte finished in second. Bamke also
made an inside move on the final lap to take third place at the stripe while
Keith finished in fourth. James Swan was fifth.
Swan was the winner of the Midwest Sportsman dash and LaMonte bested the field
in qualifying, turning in a lap at 12.668 seconds.
Steve Huelsbeck led flag-to-flag en route to the victory in the 25-lap Midwest
Modified feature.
Huelsbeck started from the pole and used the inside lane to take the lead,
bringing Wes Biswell and Ron Schmitt with him while outside front row starter
fell back into a battle with Russ Moberly and Jason Feyeresien over the fourth
position. With everyone trying to get to the bottom lane, some bumper tag
occurred throughout the field and in the ensuing traffic jam, Moberly and
Eddie Bentfield spun in turn four on lap two to draw a caution flag.
Huelsebeck led Biswell and Schmitt on the restart while Feyereisen and Dale
Prunty held down the fourth and fifth spots respectively. Huelsebeck and
Biswell jumped out ahead as the green reappeared while Feyereisen and Prunty
pressured Schmitt for third. Contact between the three on lap 19 slowed them
down slightly and allowed Huelsbeck and Biswell to pull away. Huelsbeck drove
the final laps flawlessly and drove to the checkered flag for the win while
Biswell finished a close second. Feyereisen was able to get around Schmitt in
the closing laps and crossed the stripe in third place while Schmitt and
Prunty rounded out the top five.
Earlier in the night, Biswell won the fast dash and Feyereisen was the fastest
qualifier at 12.283 seconds.
Chris Beine held off Shawn Hoefler to win the 12-lap Thunderstock feature with
Joe DeStefano Sr. charging hard to finish third. Ryan DeStefano finished in
fourth place and Eric Schuetz was fifth. Bob Losiniecki and Tom Bleeker each
won Slinger Bees races while Gary Bauer won the Port-A-John Speedway Guest
Cars event. Russ Lorbecki won the Spectator Elimination event in his 1986
Chevy Camaro and Donald Van Camp was the winner of the Figure 8 race.
