Diemel Doubles Up Late Model Wins At Shawano Speedway
By: Bert Lehman

Shawano, WI (May 5, 2007) - On a cold and windy night, Shawano Speedway continued its racing season, with A.J. Diemel heating up the track, winning both the WISSOTA Late Model and Fastrak Crate Late Model features. Julie McDermid won the IMCA Modified feature, with Rod Snellenberger winning the IMCA Stock Car feature. Eugene Gregorich continued his dominance in the IMCA Sport Mod feature, winning his third in a row.

A.J. Diemel used his pole position starting spot to jump out to the quick lead over Tim Buhler, Terry Anvelink, Nick Anvelink and Doug Blashe in the WISSOTA Late Model feature. Over the next few laps, Diemel began to pull away from the field with both Anvelinks getting by Buhler. Once in second place, Nick Anvelink set his sights on Diemel, but Diemel had already built up a good lead.

Just past the midway point of the race, the most contested position was for fifth place, with Pete Parker and Justin Ritchie battling side-by-side. Parker won that battle, and passed Buhler a couple laps later for fourth. Ritchie also worked his way by Buhler a lap later. There was no denying Diemel, as he lapped half the field in the cautionless race, to take his first victory of the season. He was followed by Nick Anvelink, Terry Anvelink, Parker and Ritchie.

In the IMCA Modified feature, Dave Diemel led the first lap, before Julie McDermid took the lead. This left Diemel in second, with Jerry Wilinski , Brad Rohloff and Dave Werbelow following. With McDermid starting to build a small lead, Wilinski began pressuring Diemel for second, while Werbelow passed Rohoff for fourth. As the race approached the midway point, Bill Lemmens’ car dropped oil in turn four, and McDermid spun in that oil, bringing out a caution. McDermid was given her spot back.

When the race was restarted, McDermid continued to lead over Wilinski, Eddie Muenster, Lance Arneson and Diemel. Muenster got by Wilinski on the next lap and set his sights on McDermid. As the laps began to wind down, Muenster was able to gain on McDermid. Muenster caught McDermid, but was never able to pressure for the lead. McDermid claimed the win, with Muenster, Arneson, Mike Wedelstadt and Diemel following.

Kurt Olson grabbed the early lead over Chas Van Ooyen, Rod Snellenberger, Junior Karcz and Mike Asenbrener in the IMCA Stock Car feature. Snellenberger moved to second on the second lap, and took the lead one lap later. Dustin Loberger also joined the top five at this time. Snellenberger had built himself a small lead, when the caution came out on lap 10.

Several cautions plagued the race over the next few laps, while Greg Gretz and Shawn Wagner moved into the top five. When the race was restarted for the final time, Snellenberger held the lead, with Gretz in pursuit. Snellenberger was up to the challenge, crossing the line ahead of Gretz, Olson, Wagner and Loberger.

In the Fastrak Crate Late Model feature, it was Justin Hirt taking the lead over Bob Schmidt, Joel Bennett, Jeff Wickershiem and Craig Bartz. Bartz was on the move, moving up to third two laps later, while Hirt built a small lead, and A.J. Diemel joining the top five. Diemel was charging through the field, moving to second on the third lap, and was gaining on Hirt. Diemel then took the lead on lap nine, only to have that taken away because of a caution.

Hirt continued to lead on the restart, with Bartz getting by Diemel. Diemel reclaimed the second spot on the next lap, and grabbed the lead two laps later. Troy Springborn worked his way by Bartz, and then Hirt to move into second. There was no catching Diemel, as he won his third straight feature in the division. He was followed by Springborn, Bartz, Hirt and Cody Grosskreutz.

Brad Bricco grabbed the early lead in the IMCA Sport Mod feature, and immediately began to build himself a big lead. Eugene Gregorich, who won the last two weeks, started mid-pack, worked his way through the field and was in second place by the end of lap four. Gregorich wasn’t gaining much on Bricco, when a caution came out on lap eight. Bricco led the next several laps despite a couple cautions. He was ruled the cause of one of those cautions, and put to the back. Once the race was restarted, Gregorich cruised to the win over Mike Czarapata, Eric Arneson, Matt Oreskovich and Travis Cain.

Racing action continues next Saturday, with racing getting underway at 6 p.m. For more information about Shawano Speedway, visit www.shawanospeedway.net.
