Late Race Pass Nets Ritchie Wissota Late Model Win At Shawano
By: Bert Lehman
Shawano, WI (May 28, 2007) - A Shawano Speedway record 141 cars were on hand
for the Speedway’s second week of racing. Justin Ritchie won the WISSOTA
Late Model feature, while A.J. Diemel won the Fastrak Crate Late Model
feature. The IMCA Modified feature was won by Brad Rohloff, with the IMCA
Stock Car feature going to Dan Michonski. Eugene Gregorich won his second IMCA
Sport Mod feature.
M.J. McBride led the first lap of the WISSOTA Late Model before the only
caution flag came out after A.J. Diemel hit the wall in turns one and two.
McBride continued to lead on the restart with Tom Naeyaert, Gordie Seegert,
Chris Oertel and Justin Ritchie following. Seegert got by Naeyaert two laps
later and immediately began to track down McBride. Ritchie was also making his
way to the front, and was gaining on Seegert with half the race in the books.
Ritchie put heavy pressure on Seegert over the next several laps. Seegert held
of Ritchie’s advances, allowing McBride to build a small lead. Ritchie
passed Seegert on the high-side with five laps remaining. Once in second,
Ritchie set his sights on McBride. McBride fended off Ritchie’s first
attempt at the lead with four laps remaining. With Ritchie running the
high-side, McBride bobbled slightly in turn two, allowing Ritchie to take the
lead and the win. He was followed by McBride, Seegert, Naeyaert and Markwardt.
In the IMCA Modified feature, Brad Rohloff grabbed the lead on a lap two
restart, with Bill Lemmens, Julie McDermid, Kyle Meyers and Lance Arneson
following. Rohloff raced out to a slight lead, while Jared Siefert and Jeremie
Hedrick joined the top five a couple laps later. Hedrick was flying on the
high-side, and was challenging for third place midway through the race. A
caution came out a couple laps later, and Hedrick headed to pit lane with left
rear problems.
Rohloff continued to lead on the restart, with Siefert moving to second,
followed by McDermid, and Dave Werbelow. McDermid got by Siefert on a late
race restart. It was Rohloff’s race, as he cruised to the win with McDermid,
Siefert, Werbelow and Kyle Meyers following him across the line. McDermid was
disqualified for being too light at the scale.
Greg Gutt led the first two laps of the IMCA Stock Car feature, with Rod
Snellenberger, Kevin Lamberies, Greg Gretz and Dan Michonski following.
Snellenberger grabbed the lead on the third lap, with Gretz following one lap
later. Snellenberger and Gretz paced the field while Dan Michonski was making
his way to the top three. Snellenberger, Gretz and Michonski battled for
several laps, with Michonski taking the lead with two laps remaining, while
Snellenberger and Gretz raced side-by-side. Michonski took home the win, with
Gretz, Snellenberger, Gutt and Shawn Wagner following. After the race, Chas
Van Ooyen claimed Gutt’s motor. Gutt elected to take the motor swap.
In the Fastrak Crate Late Model feature, Troy Springborn moved into the lead
on the second lap, with Joel Bennett, Todd Jensema, Cody Grosskreutz and A.J.
Diemel following. Springborn began pulling away while Diemel was charging hard
through the field, grabbing the second spot a lap later. Diemel began to gain
on Springborn, and grabbed the lead on lap six. Once in the lead, there was no
stopping Diemel, as he cruised to victory. He was followed by Springborn,
Craig Bartz, Grosskreutz and Jensema.
Chuck Grall led the first two laps of the IMCA Sport Mod feature, before
Eugene Gregorich moved into the top spot. Once in the lead, Gregorich pulled
out to a slight lead over Grall, Joe White, Eric Arneson and Mike Czarapata.
White took the second spot one lap later. Several cautions slowed the action,
and the race reached its time limit. Gregorich won his second straight
feature, with White, Czarapata, Tracy Wassenberg and Dave Stoffer following.
Racing action continues next Saturday, with racing getting underway at 6 p.m.
