Springborn, Siefert, Gretz, Gregorich Win At Shawano Opener
By: Bert Lehman

Shawano, WI (May 21, 2007) - After being delayed for one week, Shawano Speedway finally kicked off its racing season Saturday night. When the dust settled on the evening, featured winners included Troy Springborn in the WISSOTA Late Model, Jared Siefert in the IMCA Modified, Greg Gretz in the IMCA Stock Car, Eugene Gregorich in the IMCA Sport Mod and A.J. Diemel in the Fastrak Crate Late Model features.

Starting on the pole, Nick Anvelink jumped out to the quick lead over Gordie Seegert, Troy Springborn and Justin Ritchie in the WISSOTA Late Model feature. Anvelink had built himself a small lead, when a caution came out after three laps. When the race was restarted, Anvelink again built himself a small lead over Springborn and Seegert. Terry Anvelink moved to fourth at this time.

Over the next several laps, Springborn began to gain on Anvelink. Just past the halfway point of the race, Springborn pulled to the outside of Anvelink in turns one and two and made the outside pass stick before the final caution of the race came out. On the restart, Springborn maintained his lead over Nick Anvelink, Seegert, Terry Anvelink and A.J. Diemel. Pete Parker joined the top five a couple laps later. That’s the way it ended, with Springborn taking the win, followed by Nick Anvelink, Seegert, Terry Anvelink and Parker.

In the IMCA Modified feature, Matt McDermid grabbed the early lead over Mike Wedelstadt, Lance Arneson, Jared Siefert and Jerry Wilinski. Wilinski moved to fourth on the next lap, while Wedelstadt and Siefert battled side-by-side for several laps. Wedelstadt fended off Siefert, and then took the lead from McDermid on the high-side. Siefert moved up to second a few laps later, and set his sights on Wedelstadt.

Siefert caught Wedelstadt just past the midway point of the race. Siefert pulled to the inside of Wedelstadt a couple laps later, and grabbed the lead. Those two began to pull away from the rest of the top five of Wilinski, McDermid and Arneson. Wedelstadt would not let Siefert out of his sight, but he couldn’t make a move for the lead. Siefert went on to the victory, followed by Wedelstadt, Wilinski, Arneson and Brian Mullen.

Greg Gretz moved into the lead on the second lap of the IMCA Stock Car feature, with Brian Bruechert, Brian Ambrosius, Junior Karcz and Shawn Wagner following. Bruechert began to gain on Gretz, before pulling to the infield on lap six. The first caution of the race came out on lap seven. Gretz continued to lead on the restart, with Karcz, Dan Michonski, Mike Asenbrener and Greg Gutt following. It remained that way for the next several laps, when another caution came out.

Gretz maintained his lead on the restart, with Michonski moving to second, and followed by Karcz, Wagner and Asenbrener. Gretz pulled out to a slight lead, while Karcz took the second spot from Michonski. When the checkered flag flew, it was Gretz taking the win. He was followed by Karcz, Michonski, Wagner and Asenbrener.

In the IMCA Sport Mod feature, Brian Besaw grabbed the early lead over Mike Czarapata, Matt Oreskovich, Joe White and Eugene Gregorich. Gregorich immediately began moving to the front. A couple of cautions plagued the race over the next several laps. By the end of the fifth lap, Gregorich grabbed the lead and never looked back. He was followed across the line by Tim Jorgenson, Besaw, White and Tracy Wassenberg.

The Fastrak Crate Late Model feature was plagued by cautions. The time limit for the race expired before one official lap could be completed. A.J. Diemel was ruled the winner of the race.

Racing action continues next Saturday, with racing getting underway at 6 p.m. For more information about Shawano Speedway, visit www.shawanospeedway.net.
