Springborn Wins Twice In One Night At Shawano Speedway

Shawano, WI (August 19, 2006) - Troy Springborn claimed two wins in one night
at Shawano Speedway, winning the WISSOTA Late Model and the Fastrak Late Model
features. Paul Thorpe one his first feature of the year in the IMCA Modified
division, while Kyle Frederick won his second IMCA Stock Car feature. Brian
Besaw won his second IMCA Sport Mod feature.
Mark Mitchell jumped out to the quick lead over Cody Grosskruetz, Ron Berna,
Tim Buhler and Gordie Seegert in the WISSOTA Late Model feature. Berna grabbed
the second spot on the third lap, while Troy Springborn joined the top five
after starting in 7th place. Mitchell built himself a slight over Berna, as
Springborn continued moving toward the front. Springborn grabbed the second
spot eight laps into the race, and set his sights on Mitchell.
With Justin Ritchie and A.J. Diemel joining the top five, Springborn began
gaining on Mitchell and the top spot halfway through the race. Springborn
pulled up to Mitchell’s rear bumper with seven laps remaining and grabbed
the top spot one lap later. Diemel got by Ritchie for fourth with four laps
remaining, but it was all Springborn, as he cruised to his second straight
victory. He was followed by Mitchell, Berna, Diemel and Ritchie.
In the IMCA Modified feature, Paul Thorpe led the first lap, before Jamie
Schmidt moved into the top spot on the second lap, with Thorpe, Jeremy
Hodkiewicz, Jerry Wilinski and David Werbelow following. The top five battled
back and forth over the next several laps, with Thorpe retaking the top spot
on lap six. The top 10 cars in the running order were all racing in a pack,
running three, and sometimes four-wide.
With five laps remaining, a caution came out, slowing the action. Thorpe
continued to lead on the restart, with Lance Arneson, Werbelow, Hodkiewicz,
and Wilinski following. Eric Scribner joined the fray with a couple laps
remaining. In the last two corners on the last lap, Scribner pulled to the
inside of Thorpe in an attempt to gain the lead. Thorpe and Scribner drag
raced to the checkered flag, with Thorpe taking the win by about three feet.
Scribner, Werbelow, Arneson and Mike Wedelstadt rounded out the top five.
Mike Asenbrenner took the lead in the IMCA Stock Car feature on lap three, and
was followed by Steve Kastning, Kyle Frederick, Dan Michonski and Chas Van
Ooyen. Frederick took the second spot a couple laps later, and pulled
alongside Asenbrenner midway through the race.
Frederick and Asenbrenner battled side-by-side for a couple laps, with
Frederick eventually wrestling the top spot away. This left Asenbrenner, Jason
Czarapata, Van Ooyen and Michonski following. Asenbrenner made one final
attempt to reclaim the lead late in the race, but it was Frederick taking the
win. He was followed by Asenbrenner, Van Ooyen, Czarapata and Michonski.
Justin Hirt jumped out to the quick lead in the Fastrak Late Model feature
over Matt Rindt, Joel Bennett, Bob Schmidt and Mike Kunschke. Hirt immediately
pulled out to a good lead, while Kunschke moved all the way up to second by
the fourth lap. Troy Springborn joined the top five midway through the race,
and was up to third, when a caution came out with four laps remaining.
Using the high groove, Springborn drove around Hirt on the outside on the
restart to take over the top spot. Once in the lead, Springborn pulled away
from the field, and went on to win his fifth feature of the year. He was
followed by Hirt, Jeff Curtin, Kunschke and Schmidt.
The early portion of the IMCA Sport Mod feature was plagued with three
cautions. Once the race got going for the final time, Brad Bricco was leading
over Brian Besaw, Mike Czarapata, Tracy Wassenberg and Craig Hoffman. Besaw
pulled to the inside of Bricco and took the lead with four laps remaining.
With Besaw in the lead, Bricco, Czarapata and Wassenberg raced three-wide,
with Wassenberg winning that battle. Besaw took the win, with Wassenberg,
Czarapata, Bricco and Hoffman following.
