Springborn Returns To Victory Lane At Shawano Speedway
By: Bert Lehman

Shawano, WI (August 12, 2006) - Troy Springborn found his way back to victory lane at Shawano Speedway, winning his first WISSOTA Late Model feature of the year. Mike Wedelstadt won his second IMCA Modified feature, while Jeff Brehmer won his first ever IMCA Stock Car feature. Justin Hirt made it three feature wins in a row in the Fastrak Late Model division. Marcus Yaire won his first IMCA Sport Mod feature.

Jeff Curtin jumped out to the quick lead over Gordie Seegert, Doug Blashe, M.J. McBride and Nick Anvelink in the WISSOTA Late Model feature. Anvelink and Troy Springborn joined the top five on the next lap. Springborn kept his charge toward the front, getting by Anvelink, Blashe and Seegert over the next three laps. Springborn didn’t stay in second for long, as he grabbed the lead from Curtin on lap six.

Once in the lead, Springborn began to pull away from the field. Anvelink moved into third place just before half the race was in the books, and set his sights on the second place car of Curtin. Also at this time, Terry Anvelink joined the top five. With a big lead, Springborn had to start working his way through traffic with eight laps remaining. Curtin and Nick Anvelink began a side-by-side battle, with Anvelink eventually taking the position. But it was all Springborn, as he took home the victory. He was followed by Nick Anvelink, Curtin, Terry Anvelink and Blashe.

In the IMCA Modified feature, Jamie Schmidt grabbed the early lead over Dave Diemel, Bill Lemmens, Ron Besaw and Tom Schaal. Mike Wedelstadt joined the top five on the next lap, and was followed by Jeremie Hedrick one lap later. By the end of the fourth lap, Wedelstadt was in second, with Hedrick and Eric Scribner trying to follow him to the front. Wedelstadt grabbed the top spot a couple laps later.

With Wedelstadt in the lead, Hedrick moved to second at the halfway point, while Scribner raced in fourth behind Schmidt. A caution with four laps remaining bunched up the field. Wedelstadt continued to lead on the restart, with Hedrick, Benji LaCrosse Scribner and Schmidt following. LaCrosse brushed the wall slightly with a couple laps remaining, dropping him a couple positions. Nobody had an answer for Wedelstadt, as he took the win with Hedrick, Scribner, Jerry Muenster and LaCrosse following.

The IMCA Stock Car feature got off to a rough start, but once started, Kurt Olson jumped out to the early lead over Jeff Brehmer, Jason Czarapata, Chas Van Ooyen and Dan Michonski. Brehmer took the lead on lap four, with Czarapata following him into second. Brehmer continued to lead halfway through the race, but was receiving heavy pressure from Czarapata and Greg Gretz.

With the laps starting to wind down, Brehmer, Czarapata and Gretz raced as a pack. Brehmer and Czarapata raced side-by-side for several laps, with Czarapata leading two of those laps. Brehmer battled back, and reclaimed the lead. Gretz moved into second with a couple laps remaining, and gave Brehmer a tap, but Brehmer maintained the lead, and went on to win his first feature. He was followed by Czarapata, Gretz, Michonski and Brian Bruechert.

In the Fastrak Late Model feature, Justin Hirt used his front row starting spot to take the lead over Joel Bennett, Matt Rindt, Jeff Wickersheim and A.J. Miller. Hirt began to pull away, when a caution on lap four came out. Hirt continued to lead on the restart, and immediately began to pull away again, as Jeff Curtin and Troy Springborn were working through traffic. Curtin moved into second on lap six, with Springborn moving to third on lap eight.

A couple of cautions slowed the race with three laps remaining. On the restart, Springborn tried to get around Hirt on the high side, but Hirt was up to the challenge. In the process, Curtin got by Springborn for the second spot. That’s the way it ended, with Hirt taking the win over Curtin, Springborn, Mike Kunschke and Gary Janke.

Marcus Yaire grabbed the lead from Tom Schmidt on the second lap in the IMCA Sport Mod feature. Once in the lead, Yaire pulled out to a slight lead, leaving Craig Hoffman, Mike Czarapata, Brian Besaw and Schmidt to chase after him. Tracy Wassenberg joined the top five on lap four and moved into third place on the sixth lap. There was no denying Yaire, as he won his first feature at the Speedway. He was followed by Hoffman, Wassenberg, Besaw and Shawn Wagner.
