Anvelink Wins With Late Race Pass At Shawano Speedway
By: Bert Lehman

Shawano, WI (July 29, 2006) - Nick Anvelink used a late race pass to claim his third WISSOTA Late Model feature at Shawano Speedway. Brad Rohloff won his first IMCA Modified feature of the year, while Chas Van Ooyen won his first IMCA Stock Car feature at the Speedway. Justin Hirt won the Fastrak Crate Late Model feature, while Bob Besaw won his third IMCA Sport Mod feature.

Troy Springborn jumped out to the quick lead over Justin Ritchie, Doug Blashe, Nick Anvelink and Chris Ortel in the WISSOTA Late Model feature. Pete Parker joined the top five on the next lap. Springborn continued to lead over the next several laps, but Ritchie began gaining on the leader, and pulled up to Springborn’s rear bumper when the only caution of the race came out on lap seven.

Springborn continued to lead on the restart, with Anvelink moving to second, Ritchie dropping to third, Terry Anvelink moving up to fourth and Parker remaining in fifth. That’s the way it stayed for several laps, as A.J. Diemel was making his way to the top five. Diemel joined the top five with five laps remaining. A couple laps later, Nick Anvelink worked his way by Springborn to grab the lead. Anvelink led the rest of the way, winning his third feature of the year. He was followed by Springborn, Ritchie, Terry Anvelink and Diemel.

In the IMCA Modified feature, Paul Parker grabbed the early lead over Brad Rohloff, Dave Werbelow, Dave Diemel and Jerry Wilinski. Wilinski moved to fourth on the second lap, and then to third one lap later, as Mike Wedelstadt also joined the top five. Rohloff began gaining on Parker, and the two raced side-by-side for a couple of laps before Rohloff took control of the top spot halfway through the race. Wedelstadt and Jeremie Hedrick also got by Parker at this time. The only caution of the race came out with six laps remaining.

Rohloff maintained his lead on the restart, but was receiving pressure from Wedelstadt, with Hedrick not far behind. Using the high groove, Hedrick moved into second with three laps remaining. With two laps remaining, Hedrick ducked underneath Rohloff in corners three and four, grabbed the lead, but drifted high, allowing Rohloff to reclaim the lead. On the last lap, Hedrick tried the same move in three and four, but this time drove his car in a little too hard, and spun out. Rohloff went on to the victory. He was followed by Wedelstadt, Parker, Wilinski and Eric Scribner.

Dave Zegers jumped out to the early lead over Mike Asenbrener, Chas Van Ooyen, Kevin Lamberies and Jason Czarapata in the IMCA Stock Car feature. Van Ooyen grabbed the second spot on the next lap, and set his sights on Zegers. Van Ooyen moved into the lead on lap five, as Lamberies also got by Zegers to claim the second spot. Zegers continued to fade over the next several laps, allowing Czarapata and Greg Gretz to move up.

Once in the lead, Van Ooyen pulled out to a slight lead while Lamberies and Czarapata battled for the next several laps, racing side-by-side, and swapping the position a couple teams before Czarapata took control of second. With a couple laps remaining, Czarapata began running down Van Ooyen, but when the checkered flags waved, it was Van Ooyen taking the win, his first at the Speedway. He was followed by Czarapata, Lamberies, Gretz and Asenbrener. Lamberies won the earlier Australian Pursuit race.

In the Fastrak Late Model feature, Justin Hirt used his front row starting spot to jump out to the early lead over Joel Bennett, Chad Hohn and Rocky Miller. Troy Springborn quickly made his way through traffic to join the top five on the third lap. Hirt had already pulled out to a decent lead when a couple of cautions slowed the race on laps four and six.

Hirt continued to lead on the restarts, with Bennett and Springborn racing side-by-side, and Bob Schmidt and Jeff Curtin joining the top five. With Hirt in control, Springborn finally wrestled the second spot from Bennett with six laps remaining. A caution came out with three laps remaining. During the caution, Springborn retired from the race with motor problems, as did Curtin, whose car was leaking oil. Hirt would not be challenged and won his first feature at the Speedway. He was followed by Schmidt, Bennett, Aaron Wickersheim and Miller.

Greg Magsam grabbed the early lead in the IMCA Sport Mod feature, over Bob Besaw, Craig Hoffman, Brad Bricco and Mike Czarapata. Besaw took the lead on the second lap, only to have Hoffman grab the top spot one lap later. Besaw reclaimed the lead the next lap, and held it for one more lap before Hoffman once again grabbed the top spot. Besaw battled back, once again taking the lead with four laps remaining. Hoffman tried to take the lead on the last lap, and made contact with Besaw, but both kept going. It was Besaw taking the win, with Hoffman, Czarapata, Shawn Wagner and Bricco following.

Racing action continues Saturday night, with the action getting underway at 6 p.m. For more information about Shawano Speedway, visit www.shawanospeedway.net
