Anvelink, Springborn Win WISSOTA & FasTrak Features At Shawano
By: Bert Lehman

Shawano, Wis.(July 15, 2006) - On an extremely warm night, Nick Anvelink won the WISSOTA Late Model feature at Shawano Speedway, while Mike Wedelstadt won the IMCA Modified feature. The IMCA Stock Car feature went to Junior Karcz, and the IMCA Sport Mod feature went to Mike Czarapata. Troy Springborn again won the Fastrak Crate Late Model feature.

In the WISSOTA Late Model feature, Doug Blashe jumped out to the quick lead over Greg Stelse, Ryan Huettl, Mark Mitchell and Nick Anvelink. Stelse fell out of the top five two laps later, as Pete Parker joined the top five. Huettl grabbed the top spot on lap four, and pulled out to a slight lead. A few laps later, Anvelink worked his way by Mitchell and then Blashe to take control of the runner-up spot. A caution on lap nine slowed the action, bunching up the field.

Huettl continued to lead on the restart, but was receiving heavy pressure from Anvelink, while Mitchell, Blashe and Tom Naeyaert chased after the top two cars. Anvelink made the pass for the lead with eight laps remaining in the race. Once in the lead, Anvelink began to pull away from Huettl, who had a good cushion on the third place car of Mitchell. Naeyaert eventually got by Blashe late in the race, but it was all Anvelink at the end. He was followed by Huettl, Mitchell, Naeyaert and Blashe.

The IMCA Modified feature got off to a very rough start, with an accident involving at least nine cars on the first lap. When the race was finally started, Paul Parker grabbed the early lead over Jeremy Hodkiewicz, John Peters, Jeremy Hanson and Mike Wedelstadt. It stayed that way until lap three, when Hanson and Wedelstadt got by Hodkiewicz and Peters, with Parker still leading. Hanson then spun coming out of corner four, bringing out the caution.

Wedelstadt, Scott Mullen and Jeremie Hedrick all got by Parker on the restart. Hedrick, while running second, got too high in corner one and tagged the wall, forcing him to the pits with a flat tire. This left the battle for the lead between Wedelstadt and Mullen, with Parker, Eric Scribner and David Werbelow following. Over the final laps, Mullen was able to pull up to Wedelstadt's rear bumper, but could not make the pass, as Wedelstadt went on to the victory. He was followed by Mullen, Werbelow, Scribner and Wade Schutt. Craig Bartz won the Australian Pursuit race.

An accident on the second lap involving point leader Rod Snellenberger slowed the IMCA Stock Car feature. Snellenberger's car was damaged in the front, and he was able to continue, but he wasn't a factor the rest of the race. When the race was restarted, Dan Michonski took the lead over Greg Gutt, Jason Czarapata, Greg Gretz and Junior Karcz. Michonski held the lead for two laps, when Czarapata grabbed the top spot, leaving Michonski in a side-by-side battle with Karcz.

Karcz eventually took the second spot from Michonski, while Brian Bruechert and Kevin Lamberies swapped the fourth and fifth spots over the next several laps. Karcz wasn't content on running second, as he made the pass for the top spot midway through the race. It stayed that way until two laps remained, when the final caution of the race came out. Czarapata was able to take the lead on the restart, but Karcz battled back, reclaiming the lead on the last lap and going on to the victory. He was followed by Czarapata, Michonski, Lamberies and Kyle Frederick.

In the Fastrak Crate Late Model feature, Joel Bennett took the early lead over Bob Schmidt, Malcom Spiegel, Troy Springborn and Gary Janke. Two cautions on lap three slowed the action. Bennett continued to lead on the restart, with Schmidt, Janke, Springborn and A.J. Miller following. Bennett led through lap seven, when Springborn made his way by Bennett for the top spot. Bennett held the second spot until Janke got by him with three laps remaining, while Mike Kunschke and Schmidt battled for the fourth spot. It was all Springborn, as he went won his second feature in a row, and fourth of the season. He was followed by Janke, Bennett, Kunschke and Schmidt.

Greg Magsom led the first lap of the IMCA Sport Mod feature, before Mike Czarapata took the lead on the second lap. Shawn Wagner worked his way up to second midway through the race, with Tracy Wassenberg, Jamie Diestler and Craig Hoffman rounding out the top five. Wagner and Wassenberg swapped the second spot a couple times, but when the checkered flag waved, it was Czarapata across the line first, with Wagner, Wassenberg, Hoffman and Diestler following.
