Anvelink Wins WISSOTA Late Mode Feature At Shawano Speedway
By: Bert Lehman
Shawano, WI (May 27, 2006) - A late afternoon rain shower couldn’t slow down
the racing action at Shawano Speedway Saturday night. Nick Anvelink won a
close WISSOTA Late Model feature, while Eric Scribner won the IMCA Modified
feature with a last lap pass. The IMCA Stock Car feature went to Brian
Bruechert, with the IMCA Sport Mod feature going to Craig Hoffman. Jeff Curtin
won the Limited Late Model feature.
Doug Blashe jumped out to the quick lead over Terry Anvelink, Justin Ritchie,
Rod Snellenberger and Nick Anvelink in the WISSOTA Late Model feature.
Anvelink took over the top spot, on the second lap, with Nick Anvelink moving
to fourth. Ritchie passed Blashe for second a couple laps later, and set his
sights on Anvelink before a caution flag flew.
When the race was restarted, Blashe retook the lead, with Nick Anvelink, Terry
Anvelink, Ritchie and Gordie Seegert following. Using the high-groove, Nick
Anvelink passed Blashe for the lead, with Ritchie moving into third place.
Ritchie pulled alongside Blashe a couple laps later, and grabbed the second
spot with eight laps remaining. Ritchie began to run down Nick Anvelink, and
caught him with a couple of laps remaining. Ritchie made a couple of attempts
at the inside of Anvelink, but each time Anvelink fended off the challenge.
When the checkered flag waved, it was Nick Anvelink taking the win, with
Ritchie, Seegert, Terry Anvelink and Blashe following.
In the IMCA Modified feature, Russ Huxford led the first two laps before
Jeremie Hedrick moved into the top spot, with Bill Martin, Lance Arneson and
John Peters following. Hedrick began to pull away to a slight lead, while
Arneson moved to second and Eric Scribner joined the top five. Arneson began
gaining on Hedrick when a mid-race caution slowed the action.
On the restart, Arneson drove into turn one a little too fast, dropping him to
fourth, while Scribner moved up to second, and Travis Spaulding to third.
Arneson quickly made his way back to second place a couple laps later, and was
again gaining on Hedrick when another caution came out. There were two laps
remaining when the race was restarted for the last time. Hedrick maintained
the lead, with Scribner and Arneson following. Running the low groove in
corners three and four, Hedrick slipped up a little, allowing Scribner to get
a run around him on the high side. Scribner beat Hedrick to the line, to win
the feature. He was followed by Hedrick, Arneson, Spaulding and Jarrod
Anvelink.
Steve Kastning grabbed the early lead over Junior Karcz, Kurt Olson, Darren
Otto and Dan Michonski in the IMCA Stock Car feature. Karcz pressured Kastning
over the next several laps for the top spot, and finally grabbed that spot on
lap five. Once in the lead, Karcz built himself a slight lead, leaving
Kastning and Michonski to battle for the second spot, when a couple of
cautions slowed the action.
When the race was restarted for the final time, Darren Otto moved to the top
spot, with Brian Bruechert and Karcz following. Coming out of corner two, they
raced three-wide, with Bruechert moving into the lead. Bruechert held on the
remaining laps to win the feature. He was followed by Karcz, Rod Snellenberger,
Otto and Jason Czarapata.
In the Limited Late Model feature, Rocky Miller took the quick lead over Bob
Schmidt, Jeff Wickersheim, A.J. Miller and Aaron Wickersheim. Miller led the
first four laps, before Troy Springborn grabbed the top spot, with Jeff Curtin
following. Springborn began to pull away, with Curtin in pursuit. During the
second half of the race, Aaron Wickersheim and Bob Schmidt battled
side-by-side for five laps before Wickersheim took control of the third spot.
It was Springborn crossing the line first, but he was ruled for jumping an
earlier restart, so he was docked two positions. This gave the win to Curtin.
The top five was rounded out with Wickersheim, Springborn, Gary Janke and Joey
Braatz.
Craig Hoffman grabbed the lead at the beginning of the IMCA Sport Mod feature
and never looked back, leading every lap of the race. He was followed by Joe
Reuter, Mike Czarapata, Tracy Wassenberg and Shawn Wagner.
Racing action will continue at Shawano Speedway next Saturday. Racing actions
starts at 6:00 p.m. For more information about Shawano Speedway, visit www.shawanospeedway.net.
