Blashe Finds Victory Lane, Wassenberg Wins Second Straight At Shawano Speedway
By: Bert Lehman

Shawano, WI (May 20, 2006) - A couple of rain showers, and a long rain delay couldn’t put a damper on the racing program at Shawano Speedway. Doug Blashe won his first WISSOTA Late Model feature of the year, while Matt McDermid won a hard fought IMCA Modified feature, his first feature win at Shawano Speedway. Kyle Frederick won the IMCA Stock Car feature. Jeff Curtin won the Limited Late Model feature, while Tracy Wassenberg won his second straight IMCA Sport Mod feature.

Doug Blashe opened up a quick lead over Randy Markwardt, Jeff Curtin, Justin Ritchie and Tom Naeyaert in the WISSOTA Late Model feature. With most of the cars running the "cushion" on the tacky track, the top five remained the same over the first 14 laps of the race, with all the passing taking place back in the field. By the 14th lap, Ritchie had caught Curtin and was right on his rear bumper. A.J. Diemel joined the top five fun on the next lap before a caution flag flew for a stalled car in turn one.

When the race was restarted, Blashe maintained his lead, with Curtin, Diemel, Ron Berna and Ritchie following. Diemel grabbed the runner-up spot on the next lap, with Berna and Ritchie following. Diemel made a last ditch effort to get by Blashe on the last lap, pulling alongside him as they headed for the checkered flag. Blashe and Diemel crossed the finish line at virtually the same time, with Blashe being awarded the victory. He was followed by Diemel, Berna, Tim Buhler and Ritchie.

Matt McDermid jumped out to the early lead over Ron Besaw, Eric Scribner, Scott Mullen, and Brad Rohloff in the IMCA Modified feature. Scribner fell to fifth on the next lap, while McDermid began to pull away from the field. A caution on lap six slowed the action. Rohloff moved up to the second spot on the restart, before another caution came out two laps later.

When the race was restarted, McDermid continued to lead, with Rohloff right on his rear bumper, while Jeremie Hedrick, Mullen and Benji LaCrosse rounded out the top five. Scribner rejoined the top five on the next lap, while Rohloff began putting heavy pressure on McDermid for the lead. McDermid was able to hold of the challenges, and crossed the finish line first. Following McDermid across the finish line was Rohloff, Hedrick, Mullen and Scribner.

In the IMCA Stock Car feature, Mike Brehmer grabbed the early lead over Kyle Frederick, Jason Czarapata, Brian Ambrosious and Brian Bruechert. Brehmer held the lead for four laps, when Frederick made the pass for the top spot. Czarapata headed for the pits on the next lap, leaving Dan Michonski, Bruechert, Rod Snellenberger and Brehmer to chase after Frederick.

While Frederick led the race, Michonski and Bruechert battled side-by-side for three laps for the second spot. Bruechert finally secured that position with three laps remaining. In the end, it was Frederick winning, with Bruechert, Snellenberger, Michonski and Asa Doxtator following.

A.J. Miller led the first three laps of the Limited Late Model feature, before Jeff Curtin took the lead. Joey Braatz followed Curtin past Miller, with Mike Kunschke and Troy Springborn rounding out the top five. Once in the lead, Curtin began to build a comfortable lead, while Braatz and Kunschke battle for the second spot.

Over the final five laps of the race, Kunschke and Springborn swapped the third position each lap before Kunschke secured it and then passed Braatz for second. Curtin went on to the victory over Kunschke, Braatz, Springborn and Gary Janke.

Craig Hoffman led the first four laps of the IMCA Sport Mod feature, when a caution came out when several cars got together in turn one. In the incident, Shawn Wagner’s car landed on its roof. Wagner was not injured. Hoffman led the first two laps after the restart, before giving up the lead to Tracy Wassenberg. Wassenberg led the rest of the way, winning his second straight feature. He was followed by Chad Nelson, Hoffman, Brad Bricko and Greg Magsom.

Racing action will continue at Shawano Speedway next Saturday. Racing actions starts at 6:00 p.m. For more information about Shawano Speedway, visit www.shawanospeedway.net
