Diemel Dominates WISSOTA Late Model Feature At Shawano Speedway
By: Bert Lehman

Shawano, WI (May 6, 2006) - Nice weather finally greeted the Shawano Speedway Saturday night. A.J. Diemel won his first feature of the year in the WISSOTA Late Model division, with Troy Springborn winning his second Limited Late Model feature. Jerry Muenster won a crazy ending to the IMCA Modified feature, while Greg Gretz won the IMCA Stock Car feature, and Tracy Wassenberg won the IMCA Sport Mod feature.

The WISSOTA Late Model feature got off to a rough start, with two cautions during the first two laps. When the race was restarted on lap three, Jeff Curtin jumped out to the lead over A.J. Diemel, Gordie Seegert, Mark Mitchell and Tim Buhler. Diemel and Seegert worked their way by Curtin on the next lap, while Troy Springborn joined the top five before another caution came out with five laps in the book. Diemel maintained his lead on the restart, with Buhler, Seegert, Springborn and Curtin following.

With the passing of each lap, Diemel began to pull away from the rest of the field. This left Buhler, Seegert and Springborn to race in a pack for the second spot, while Mitchell rejoined the top five. With half the race in the books, Springborn moved into the second spot, with Seegert right on his rear bumper. As Diemel controlled the rest of the race, Seegert put heavy pressure on Springborn over the final four laps, and made it worthwhile on the last lap, grabbing the second spot from Springborn. But it was all Diemel, as he cruised to the victory over Seegert, Springborn, Buhler and Mitchell.

Russ Reinhold grabbed the early lead over Kyle Meyers, Jerry Muenster, Tom Schaal and Jeremy Hodkiewicz in the IMCA Modified feature. Reinhold held the lead for the first two laps, before Jeremie Hedrick moved to the top spot on a restart on lap three. Hedrick began pulling away from the field, while Muenster moved to second, leaving Reinhold and Schaal in a battle for third. As the race approached its midway point, Eric Scribner was slicing his way through traffic, moving all the way up to third.

Scribner made his way by Muenster for second with five laps remaining and set his sights on Hedrick. Scribner gained on Hedrick with each remaining lap, and was right on his bumper as the white flag waved. Hedrick was up the challenge, beating Scribner to the line. After the race was over, Hedrick was docked two positions for jumping an earlier restart, giving the win to Scribner. But Scribner was then disqualified for grinding on his tires. This gave the official win to Muenster, with Hedrick, Lance Arneson, Brandon Czarapata and Craig Bartz rounding out the top five.

After a first lap restart, Greg Gretz took the early lead over Darren Otto, Kyle Frederick, Rod Snellenberger and Larry Karcz in the IMCA Stock Car feature. Otto fell to fourth on the next lap, with Snellenberger moving up to second. Snellenberger maintained pace with Gretz over the next several laps, while Karcz, Frederick and Jason Czarapata battled for position.

With five laps remaining, Karz made contact with Snellenberger in turn three, causing Snellenberger to spin. Karcz was put to the back, while Snellenberger got his spot back. Snellenberger tried several times over the final laps to take the lead, but it was Gretz taking the win over Snellenberger, Frederick, Brian Bruechert and Czarapata.

Rocky Miller led the first nine laps of the Limited Late Model division before Troy Springborn and Jeff Curtin caught him. Springborn had started the race in 17th place and Curtin had started in 15th place. A caution came out right after Springborn had taken the lead. Curtin drove into corner run hard on the restart in an attempt to take the lead. Springborn held off that challenge, leaving Curtin Mike Kunschke, Jeff Wickersheim and Bob Schmidt following. That’s the way it ended, with Springborn winning his second feature of the year.

In the IMCA Sport Mod feature, Mike Czarapata took the quick lead over Brad Bricko, Tracy Wassenberg, Jamie Diestler and Shawn Wagner. Wassenberg moved to second on the next lap, before two cautions slowed the action. Czarapata kept the lead on the restart, but Wassenberg began pressuring for the lead with six laps remaining. Wassenberg eventually took over the top spot and never looked back, winning his first feature of the year. He was followed by Czarapata, Wagner, Chad Nelson and Charles Grall.

Racing action will continue at the Shawano Speedway next Saturday. Racing actions starts at 6:00 p.m. For more information about the Shawano Speedway, visit www.shawanospeedway.net.
