Anvelink, Bartz, Bruechert, Springborn, & Besaw Find Victory Lane At Shawano Opener
by Bert Lehman

April 15, 2006 (Shawano, Wis.): Great weather and a new season helped bring a jam-packed grandstand, and 126 cars to the pits at the Shawano Speedway Saturday night. Terry Anvelink won the WISSOTA Late Model feature, while Craig Bartz won the IMCA Modified feature. The IMCA Stock Car feature was won by Brian Bruechert, and the Limited Late Model feature was won by Troy Springborn. Robert Besaw won the first ever IMCA Sport Mod feature.

M.J. McBride jumped out to the quick lead over Randy Markwardt, Tom Naeyaert, Justin Ritchie and Terry Anvelink in the WISSOTA Late Model feature. Over the first four laps, McBride built himself a slight lead, with Anvelink moving to third. On the fifth lap, Naeyaert’s car came to a rest in the ditch area in coming out of turn two, bringing out the only caution of the race.

Flashing back 15 years, long-time veterans McBride and Anvelink duked it out over the next couple laps, with Anvelink eventually taking the lead with a high-side pass. Also at this time, A.J. Diemel made his way to the top five. Diemel overtook Markwardt on the seventh lap, and disposed of McBride two laps later to take over second place. With Anvelink firmly in control of the race, Diemel tried to cut into the lead, while Nick Anvelink was making his way through the top five. With the white flag waving, Nick Anvelink pulled alongside McBride. When the checkered flag dropped, it was Terry Anvelink taking the win, followed by Diemel, Nick Anvelink, McBride and Ron Berna.

Brian Mullen grabbed the early lead in the IMCA Modified feature, a race that included some of the best drivers from Northeastern and Southern Wisconsin. Craig Bartz, Eric Van Iten, Benji LaCrosse and Eddie Muenster were all in pursuit of Bartz. Mullen began applying pressure on Bartz when the caution came out when Lance Arneson blew is motor entering corner one.

On the restart, Bartz, Mullen and LaCrosse battled three-wide for the lead, for almost a complete. Bartz was able to win that fight, maintaining his lead, with LaCrosse moving into second place. Mullen didn’t stay in third place for long, reclaiming the runner-up spot on the next lap, with Brad Rohloff and Jared Siefert running in fourth and fifth. Over the next several laps, Bartz pulled out to a slight lead, leaving Mullen and LaCrosse to battle for second place. A couple of cautions plagued the race late, but it was all Bartz at the end, as he claimed the feature over Mullen, LaCrosse, Siefert and Ed Stuela.

In the IMCA Stock Car feature, Dan Michonski took the early lead over Chas Van Ooyen, Brian Bruechert, Jason Czarapata and Kevin Lamberies. Bruechert moved to second on the next lap, before pulling alongside Michonski one lap later and taking over the top spot. With Bruechert in the lead, Michonski, Rod Snellenberger and Czarapata raced in a pack for the second spot.

Snellenberger eventually grabbed the second spot, with Czarapata settling into third, and Michonski falling to fourth, while Larry Karcz moved up to fifth. As the race progressed, Bruechert continued to pace the field, and eventually took the win. He was followed by Snellenberger, Czarapata, Michonski and Karcz.

Troy Springborn started on the pole and quickly jumped into the lead when the green flag waved at the beginning of the Limited Late Model feature. Joey Braatz and A.J. Miller battled side-by-side for the second spot with Bob Schmidt and Mike Kunschke following. Miller eventually moved to second, with Aaron Wickersheim moving to third halfway through the race. The only caution then slowed the race.

Springborn continued to dominate on the restart, with Wickersheim, Miller, Kunschke and Gary Janke following. Jeff Curtin joined the top five over the next several laps, but nobody was going to catch Springborn, as he won the race. He was followed by Wickersheim, Curtin, Janke and Miller.

The first ever IMCA Sport Mod feature at the Shawano Speedway was led early by Craig Hoffman, with Robert Besaw, Chuck Grall, Mike Czarapata and Shawn Wagner following. Hoffman led the first four laps, before a caution came out. After the race was restarted, Hoffman spun by himself in turn four, bringing out another caution and ending the race because of the curfew. This gave the first ever IMCA Sport Mod feature win at the Speedway to Robert Besaw. He was followed by Grall, Wagner, Joe Reuter and Tracy Wassenberg.

Racing action continues next Saturday night, with the action getting underway at 6:30 p.m. For more information about the Shawano Speedway, visit: www.shawanospeedway.net.
