Seegert Wins Feature, Berna Wins Late Model Championship At Shawano
By: Bert Lehman

Shawano, WI (September 3, 2005) - In front of 2,700 fans, Gordie Seegert won his heat race and the WISSOTA Late Model feature, but fell two points shy of the track championship, which went to Ron Berna. The IMCA Modified track championship ended in a tie between Lance Arneson and Eric Scribner. Jason Czarapata repeated as IMCA Stock Car track champion, while Jeff Curtin won his first Limited Late Model championship.

M.J. McBride jumped out to the quick lead over Tom Naeyaert, Gordie Seegert, Ron Berna and Troy Springborn in the WISSOTA Late Model feature. With a couple of laps in the books, Naeyaert began pressuring McBride for the lead. McBride fended off those challenges, while Seegert pulled up to Naeyaert’s rear bumper. Seven laps into the race, Seegert, using the low groove, passed Naeyaert and then McBride one lap later for the lead.

Once in the lead, Seegert pulled out to a slight lead over McBride, while Springborn and Berna battled for the fourth spot. Naeyaert once again began to reel in McBride, pulling up to his rear bumper with five laps remaining. Naeyaert grabbed the spot on the next lap, while Nick Anvelink joined the top five by working his way by Berna. Seegert continued to pull away from the field, while Springborn and Anvelink worked their way by McBride. Seegert cruised to the victory, with Naeyaert, Springborn, Anvelink and McBride following.

In the IMCA Modified feature, Frank Heller grabbed the early lead over Ed Stohula, Mike Watson, Tom Haferkorn and Jamie Schmidt. A caution with two laps in the books slowed the action. Heller continued to lead on the restart, with Stohula, Haferkorn, Watson and Craig Bartz following. Jerry Muenster joined the top five on the next lap, and began battling with Bartz. Muenster got by Bartz, as well as Haferkorn for the third spot.

With the leaders maintaining their positions, the best battle on the track was between Eric Scribner and Lance Arneson, with the track championship on the line. Scribner moved ahead of Arneson at the drop of the green flag, and maintained that position until five laps remained. It was at that point that Arneson got by Scribner, by one position, tying him in the points. Arneson then passed Stohula with four laps remaining, putting him one point ahead of Scribner. Scribner got by Stohula with two laps remaining and maintained that position. This meant Arneson and Scribner would tie for the track championship. Heller went on to win the race, with Haferkorn, Bartz, Arneson and Scribner following. After the race, Bernie Miller claimed the motor of Bartz and Jeremy Hodkiewecz claimed the motor of Heller.

Kurt Olson took the quick lead over Scott Stewart, Rod Snellenberger, Leslie Slater and Mike Brehmer in the IMCA Stock Car feature. Snellenberger quickly moved to the second spot and began pressuring Olson for the lead, when the caution flag waved on lap five. Snellenberger grabbed the lead on the restart, with Olson, Dan Michonski, Mike Brehmer and Stewart following.

Once in the lead, Snellenberger began to build himself a nice lead, while Michonski pulled alongside Olson for the runner-up spot. Kyle Frederick, who still had a chance for the championship, also joined the top five at this time. Another caution with four laps remaining once again slowed the action. Snellenberger maintained his lead on the restart, with Michonski, Frederick, Brehmer and Olson following. That’s the way it ended, with Snellenberger taking the win. With his sixth place finish, Jason Czarapata defended his track championship, his third overall at Shawano Speedway. After the race, Chas Van Ooyen claimed a shock from Snellenberger and Jim Gonion claimed Jeff Brehmer’s motor.

Jeff Curtin grabbed the lead on the opening lap of the Limited Late Model feature and never looked back. Luke Uttecht and Bob Schmidt ran second and third during the early portion of the race. Jesse Peebles was the driver on the move, starting the feature in last place and working his way to second by the end of the seventh lap. There was no catching Curtin, as he cruised to yet another feature win, as well as the track championship.

There will be one more night of racing at the Shawano Speedway on Saturday night. For more information about Shawano Speedway, visit www.shawanospeedway.net
