Springborn & Bartz Win Thrilling Features At Shawano
By: Bert Lehman
Shawano, WI (August 27, 2005) - Defending WISSOTA Late Model track champion
Troy Springborn put some of his bad luck behind him and won a thrilling
WISSOTA Late Model feature at the Shawano Speedway. Craig Bartz also won a
thrilling IMCA Modified feature, while Jason Czarapata won the IMCA Stock Car
feature. Jeff Curtin once again won the Limited Late Model feature.
Troy Springborn jumped out to the quick lead over M.J. McBride, Luke Roffers,
Randy Markwardt and Terry Anvelink in the WISSOTA Late Model feature. Anvelink
grabbed the fourth spot on the next lap, when the caution flag waved.
Springborn continued to lead on the restart, with Roffers putting heavy
pressure on McBride for the second spot, and eventually taking over that spot.
Another caution slowed the action on lap six.
Springborn maintained his lead on the restart, with Nick Anvelink moving from
fifth to second, while Roffers, McBride and Terry Anvelink followed. Nick
Anvelink began to track down Springborn, and pulled alongside him halfway
through the race, while Ron Berna joined the top five. With Springborn running
the high-side and Anvelink running the low-groove, they put on an unbelievable
show racing side-by-side for much of the next eight laps. Springborn led all
those laps except one. With two laps remaining, Anvelink regrouped and made
another attempt for the lead on the last lap. He wasn?t able to make the pass,
as Springborn went on to victory. He was followed by Nick Anvelink, Terry
Anvelink, Roffers and Berna.
Tom Haferkorn grabbed the lead in the IMCA Modified feature on the second lap,
while Ed Stohula, Jim Hanson, Jeremy Hodkiewecz and Tom Schaal were all in
pursuit. Haferkorn pulled away to a slight lead over the next several laps,
while Craig Bartz joined the top ten and began making his march to the front.
Not far behind Bartz was Jeremie Hedrick. By the time half the race was in the
books, Bartz and Hedrick began cutting into Haferkorn?s lead.
With five laps remaining and Hedrick right on his rear bumper, Bartz grabbed
the lead, dropping Haferkorn to third. Hedrick was glued to Bartz?s rear
bumper the next couple laps, while Eric Scribner was making his way into the
top five. With the laps winding down, Bartz continued to lead, but Hedrick
continued to lurk in second. On the last lap, Hedrick ducked inside of Bartz
in turns three and four, pulling alongside Bartz. The two raced down the
frontstretch with Bartz taking the win by inches. Hedrick, Haferkorn, Scribner
and Hodkiewecz followed him across the line.
In the IMCA Stock Car feature, Kurt Olson took command of the lead over Steve
Kastning, Barry Van Straten and Rod Snellenberger. Kastning, Snellenberger and
Van Straten raced three-wide on the next lap, with Brian Bruechert also
joining the top five. By the end of the fourth lap, Snellenberger had moved up
to second, only to fall back to fourth place on the next lap. Van Straten and
Kastning swapped the second spot a couple times over the next couple
laps.
Several cautions, with one of them involving Olson and Snellenberger,
with six laps remaining slowed the action. Van Straten assumed the lead on the
restart, with Bruechert, Kastning, Jason Czarapata and Mike Ashenbrenner
following. It stayed that way for the next couple laps, before Larry Karcz
moved to fifth. A late race caution made it a two lap shootout to the finish.
Czarapata moved into the lead on the restart, with Van Straten, Karcz,
Bruechert and Kastning following. Czarapata held on for the victory, with
Karcz, Kastning, Van Straten and Bruechert following.
Bob Schmidt led the early portion of the Limited Late Model feature, with Jeff
Curtin, Aaron Wickersheim, Jesse Peebles and Nate Yonker following. Curtin
worked his way by Schmidt on the third lap, with Wickersheim following one lap
later. Once in the lead, Curtin began to pull away from the field. The best
battle on the track was between Schmidt and Peebles for the third spot.
Peebles held the third spot, but raced side-by-side with Schmidt. But with
three laps remaining, Peebles slowed and headed to the pits. It was all
Curtin, though, as he cruised to the victory over Wickersheim, Schmidt,
Kunschke and Braatz.
With one week of points racing left at the Shawano Speedway, there are some
very close battles for the track championships. After dropping out of the
feature Saturday night, Gordie Seegert loses his points lead in the WISSOTA
Late Model division. Ron Berna reclaims the lead, and is eight points ahead of
A.J. Diemel and 12 points ahead of Seegert.
With Lance Arneson having problems during the IMCA Modified feature and
finishing 21st, and Eric Scribner finishing fourth, Scribner takes over the
points lead by one point over Arneson. Jerry Muenster is in third place 18
points back.
Jason Czarapata leads the IMCA Stock Car division by nine points over Kyle
Frederick and 16 points over Brian Bruechert. Jeff Curtin has a 42 point lead
over Jesse Peebles in the Limited Late Model division.
Racing action will get started 30 minutes earlier this Saturday during the
Shawano County Fair. The action will get underway at 6 p.m. For more
