Anvelink Wins Sixth Late Model Feature At Shawano
By: Bert Lehman

Shawano, WI (August 13, 2005) - Nick Anvelink made it two in a row at Shawano Speedway by winning the WISSOTA Late Model feature, his sixth of the year. Eric Scribner won his first IMCA Modified feature of the year, and tightened up the point standings in the process. Chas Van Ooyen and Matt Rindt each won their first feature races at Shawano Speedway in the IMCA Stock Car and Limited Late Model divisions.

Nick Anvelink jumped out to the early lead over A.J. Diemel, Pete Parker, Terry Casey and Greg Stelse in the WISSOTA Late Model feature. Gordie Seegert joined the top five on the second lap and began applying pressure on Casey for fourth. It didn’t take Anvelink long to build himself a good lead, leaving the best battles further back. Chris Carlson was the driver on the move, grabbing the fourth spot on the fifth lap.

While Diemel continued to try and chase down Anvelink, Carlson began gaining on Parker, while Seegert was trying to get back into the top five. Carlson caught Parker with half the race in the books, and grabbed the third spot on the next lap. He then set his sights on Diemel. Seegert rejoined the top five with five laps remaining in the race. Two laps later Seegert worked his way by Parker for the fourth spot. It was all Anvelink, though, as he was followed by Diemel, Carlson, Seegert and Parker across the line.

In the IMCA Modified feature, Ed Stehula grabbed the early lead over Jamie Schmidt, Norm Walbruck, Brad Rohloff and Wade Schutt. Rohloff broke something in the rear of his car, forcing him to pit lane on the third lap, while Schutt headed to the pits a couple laps later during a caution. When the race was restarted, Stehula continued to lead over Schmidt, with Eric Scribner moving into the third spot, and Norm Walbruck and Eddie Muenster following.

Schmidt began putting pressure on Stehula over the next several laps, but each time Stehula fought off the challenges. This allowed Scribner to gain ground on the lead cars. Scribner grabbed the second spot from Schmidt with five laps to go, and pulled up to Stehula’s rear bumper on the next lap. He pulled alongside Stehula on the next lap, before taking the lead. Scribner went on to the victory, with Stehula, Schmidt, Mike Wedelstadt and Muenster following.

Leslie Slater led the first lap of the IMCA Stock Car feature before Kevin Lamberies took over the top spot. Lamberies continued to lead over the next several laps, with B.J. Giese, Slater, Darren Otto and Chas Van Ooyen following. Giese ducked to the inside of Lamberies on the sixth lap, and took the lead. Lamberies continued to fall back, eventually settling in the fifth spot midway through the race.

Giese began to pull away from the rest of the field, while Van Ooyen moved up to the second spot, with Larry Karcz and Kyle Frederick challenging him. Jason Czarapata joined the mix a couple laps later. With the laps winding down Giese’s lead began to vanish, leaving a free-for-all the final lap between Giese, Van Ooyen, Czarapata and Frederick. Giese crossed the line first, followed by Van Ooyen, Czarapata, Frederick and Karcz. Giese pulled into the pit area in the wrong location, and was disqualified. This gave the win to Van Ooyen. In the claim area, Van Ooyen’s engine was claimed by Mike Ashenbrenner.

In the Limited Late Model feature, Matt Rindt jumped out to the quick lead over Bob Schmidt, Nate Yonker, Aaron Wickersheim and Jesse Peebles. Wickersheim grabbed the third spot on lap three, with Peebles taking fourth one lap later. Rindt continued to lead, while Wickersheim was making is way to the front, getting by Schmidt on lap six. Two laps later, Wickersheim pulled alongside Rindt, but couldn’t make the pass.

Over the next several laps, Jeff Curtin made his way by Peebles for the fourth spot, as Wickersheim regrouped. With only a few laps remaining, Wickersheim used the high groove and pulled alongside Rindt. They raced side-by-side for the next couple laps, with Rindt fending off the challenges. When the checkered flag waved, it was Rindt winning his first feature at Shawano Speedway. He was followed by Wickersheim, Schmidt, Curtin and Peebles.

Racing action continues Saturday night, with the action starting at 6:30 p.m. For more information about the Shawano Speedway, visit www.shawanospeedway.net
