Anvelink Wins Late Model Beat Mother Nature Feature At Shawano
By: Bert Lehman

Shawano, WI (July 21, 2005) - With Mother Nature providing a perfect night for racing, the Shawano Speedway hosted a special Beat Mother Nature night at the races Thursday night. Nick Anvelink won the WISSOTA Late Model feature, while Mike Wedelstadt won the IMCA Modified feature. Larry Karcz won the IMCA Stock Car feature. Jeff Curtin won the Limited Late Model feature.

Starting in the second spot, Ron Berna jumped out to the early lead over Nick Anvelink, Kerry Hansen, Tom Naeyaert and Chris Carlson in the WISSOTA Late Model feature. Terry Casey joined the top five on the next lap. Hansen began challenging Anvelink over the next several laps and finally grabbed the second spot on lap five. Once in second, Hansen closed in on Berna and began challenging for the lead. It wasn’t meant to be for Hansen, as he pulled to pit lane halfway through the race, before the first caution of the race came out.

On the restart, Anvelink ducked to the inside of Berna and grabbed the top spot. Casey, Carlson and Gordie Seegert rounded out the top five. It stayed that way until five laps remained in the race, when Carlson’s car flipped violently in turns three and four. Carlson was not injured in the accident. Anvelink continued to lead on the restart, and actually began pulling away from the field with Casey, Tim Buhler, M.J. McBride and Berna following. With Anvelink taking the white flag, Berna’s car came to a stop in turn four, ending the race. The win went to Anvelink, with Casey, Buhler, McBride and Seegert following.

In the IMCA Modified feature, Jeremy Hodkiewecz grabbed the early lead over Jared Siefert, John Berna, Mike Wedelstadt and Craig Bartz. Those five drivers pulled away from the rest of the field, and by lap four Wedelstadt had moved up to second place, and was gaining on Hodkiewecz. Wedelstadt caught Hodkiewecz and tried several times to take the lead, but could not make the pass stick, which also allowed Bartz to close in on the top two cars.

A caution halfway through the race bunched up the field. Hodkiewecz fended off Wedelstadt for one more lap, before giving up the lead with six laps remaining. Bartz followed Wedelstadt past Hodkiewecz for second place. Over the final laps of the race, Wedelstadt and Bartz engaged in a hard fought battle with Bartz getting along the inside of Wedelstadt once. Wedelstadt had more momentum, though, and went on to the victory. Bartz, Eric Scribner, Hodkiewecz and Berna followed him across the line.

Kyle Frederick pulled out to the quick lead over Jason Czarapata, Larry Karcz, Chas Van Ooyen and Dan Michonski in the IMCA Stock Car feature. Karcz moved into the lead on the next lap. Frederick didn’t give up, staying right on Karcz’s rear bumper over the next several laps, before taking the lead again on lap six. Frederick, Karcz and Czarapata pulled away from the rest of the field.

Frederick maintained his lead through the middle part of the race, with Karcz and Czarapata right behind him, often side-by-side. Karcz once again began pressuring for the lead as the laps began to wind down. With the white flag waving, Frederick encountered slower cars on the backstretch. Frederick went to the outside of the slower cars, while Karcz went to the inside of the slower cars. Frederick got boxed in behind a slower car, allowing Karcz to move into the top spot. Karcz beat Frederick to the line, to win the feature. Czarapata, Van Ooyen and Michonski rounded out the top five. Michonski claimed Karcz’s engine after the race.

In the Limited Late Model feature, Bob Schmidt led the first two laps over Mike Kunschke, Rocky Miller, Matt Rindt and Jeff Curtin. Curtin moved to the second spot on a restart after one lap, before taking the lead from Schmidt on the third lap. Once in the lead, Curtin began pulling away from the field. This left Schmidt and Kunschke to battle for the second spot.

A caution with five laps to go negated Curtin’s lead. It didn’t matter, as Curtin maintained his lead on the restart, with Schmidt, Aaron Wickersheim, Jesse Peebles and Kunschke following. That’s the way it ended, with Curtin getting the win.

Racing action continues Saturday night, with the action starting at 6:30 p.m. For more information about the Shawano Speedway, visit www.shawanospeedway.net
