Berna Fends Off Challenges To Win Late Model Feature At Shawano
By: Bert Lehman
Shawano, WI (July 16, 2005) - On a very hot night for racing, Ron Berna won
his first WISSOTA Late Model feature of the year at the Shawano Speedway
Saturday night. Jeremie Hedrick won his third IMCA Modified feature, while
Jason Czarapata also won his third feature in the IMCA Stock Car feature.
Jesse Peebles won the Limited Late Model feature, his first of the year.
Ron Berna rocketed into the lead of the WISSOTA Late Model feature, ahead of
Tom Naeyaert, Chris Carlson, Nick Anvelink and Gordie Seegert. Anvelink moved
to third on the next lap before the first caution flag of the race flew. Berna
continued to lead on the restart, with Naeyaert, Anvelink, Seegert and Carlson
following. Berna began to build a slight lead over the next few laps, while
Seegert and Carlson were in a dog fight for the fourth spot. The second
caution flag flew on lap 10, when Anvelink’s car broke, and came to a stop
in corner four.
Seegert moved up to the second spot on the restart, while M.J. McBride also
joined the top five. Seegert held the second spot for two laps, before Carlson
made the pass for the second spot. The driver on the move at this time was
Terry Anvelink, who started in 10th place, and found himself in the top five
with seven laps remaining. A final caution with three laps remaining set up a
shootout to the finish. Berna maintained his lead on the restart, but Naeyaert
and Carlson raced side-by-side applying pressure on Berna. Berna fended off
the challenges to win his first feature of the year. He was followed by
Naeyaert, Carlson, Terry Anvelink and Seegert.
In the IMCA Modified feature, Jamie Schmidt led the first two laps before the
only caution flag of the race flew. Jeremie Hedrick moved into the lead on the
restart, with Schmidt, Brad Rohloff, Eddie Muenster and Jerry Wilinski
following. Wilinski moved into the fourth spot on the next lap. With Hedrick
adding to his lead with each lap, it remained that way until lap eight, when
Lance Arneson passed Muenster for the fifth spot.
Rohloff pulled alongside Schmidt on lap 10, and took over the second spot
shortly after that. Once past Schmidt, Rohloff began gaining on Hedrick over
the remaining laps. With two laps remaining, Rohloff pulled up to Hedrick’s
rear bumper, while Arneson grabbed the fourth spot. In turn four, heading for
the white flag, Rohloff pulled to the inside of Hedrick, but could not make
the pass stick. Hedrick held on for the win, his third of the season. He was
followed by Rohloff, Schmidt, Arneson and Wilinski.
Mike Brehmer grabbed the early lead over Kevin Lamberies, Dan Michonski, Jeff
Brehmer and Jason Czarapata in the IMCA Stock Car feature. Brehmer held the
lead for three laps when Lamberies grabbed the top spot. With Lamberies in the
lead, Michonski and Czarapata were engaged in a side-by-side battle that
lasted five laps. While those two battled, Brian Bruechert and Kyle Frederick
were duking it out for the fifth spot.
Czarapata eventually made the pass on Michonski and then pulled alongside
Lamberies for the lead with three laps remaining. Czarapata was in the lead
for a brief moment, but Lamberies got the lead back, leaving Czarapata to
battle with Michonski again. With the white flag waving, Czarapata ducked to
the inside of Lamberies entering corner one. Some contact was made between the
two cars. Czarapata moved into the lead, and went on to win his third feature
of the year. He was followed by Lamberies, Michonski, Larry Karcz and
Bruechert.
Several early cautions got the Limited Late Model feature off to a slow start.
When the race finally got underway, Jesse Peebles assumed the lead, with Aaron
Wickersheim, Bob Schmidt, Luke Uttecht and Jeff Deutscher following. Peebles
began to pull away from the field over the next several laps. Mike Kunschke
joined the top five on the sixth lap. Several caution flags plagued the race
over the next few laps. With the time limit up, the race was ruled complete,
with Peebles winning his first feature of the year. He was followed by Uttecht,
Kunsckhe, Matt Rindt and Troy Wilson.
Racing action continues next Saturday night, with the action starting at 6:30
p.m. There will also be a Beat Mother Nature night of racing on Thursday, July
21. This night of racing will include the regular Shawano Speedway divisions.
