Diemel Uses Late Race Pass To Win At Shawano
By Bert Lehman
Shawano, WI (May 28, 2005) - Another great night of racing greeted fans at the
Shawano Speedway Saturday night. A.J. Diemel returned to victory lane, winning
his second WISSOTA Late Model feature, while Brad Rohloff won his first
feature of the year in the IMCA Modified feature. Brian Bruechert also won his
first IMCA Stock Car feature of the year, while Aaron Wickersheim won his
first Limited Late Model feature of the year.
The WISSOTA Late Model feature got started with A.J. Diemel jumping out to the
quick lead over Ron Berna, Cody Grosskreutz, Terry Casey and Troy Springborn.
Casey made his way by Grosskreutz on the next lap, and then Berna on the
following lap, as he set his sights on the leader. Casey began gaining on
Diemel, while Springborn grabbed the fourth spot from Grosskreutz. Using the
high groove, Casey made the pass for the lead on the seventh lap.
Once in the lead, Casey began to pull away slightly from the rest of the
field, as Diemel, Berna, Springborn and Grosskreutz began to spread out on the
track. The best battle was for the fifth spot, with Chris Carlson advancing
through the field and pressuring Grosskreutz for the spot. Carlson grabbed the
spot with seven laps remaining. With five laps to go, Diemel began to gain on
Casey, as they were also encountering lapped traffic. Diemel continued to gain
on Casey over the next few laps, when he made the pass for the lead with two
laps remaining. Diemel held on the rest of the way to claim the victory. He
was followed by Casey, Berna, Springborn and Carlson.
Jeremy Hodkiewicz led the first lap of the IMCA Modified feature before Brad
Rohloff grabbed the top spot on the second lap. Jeremie Hedrick, Matt McDermid
and Craig Bartz rounded out the top five, with Hedrick charging to the front
running the high groove. Hedrick moved into the second spot on the fourth lap,
and immediately began pressuring Rohloff for the stop spot. Running just
inches from the outside guardrail, Hedrick powered into the lead before a
caution flag flew on lap eight.
Hedrick continued to lead on the restart with Rohloff, Hodkiewicz, Eddie
Muesnter and McDermid following. Muenster grabbed the third spot one lap
later, before another caution flag flew. On the restart, Hedrick continued to
lead, but Rohloff began applying heavy pressure on Hedrick with both drivers
battling in the high groove. Hedrick continued to run inches from the outside
wall, while Rohloff was just inches inside Hedrick. Hedrick was able to hold
of the challenges, but finally succumbed to Rohloff with two laps remaining.
Once Rohloff gained the lead, he pulled away from Hedrick. Rohloff took home
the win, with Hedrick, Muenster, Schaal and Bartz following.
In the IMCA Stock Car feature, Jeremy Christians led the first lap over Jamie
Schmidt, Chaz Van Ooyen, Rod Snellenberger and Kyle Frederick. On the second
lap, Snellenberger moved all the way from fourth to first. Christians began to
fade a bit over the next few laps, allowing Brian Bruechert to jump into the
second spot when the first and only caution of the race came out.
Snellenberger continued to lead on the restart, with Bruechert, Frederick, Van
Ooyen and Schmidt following. Snellenberger began to pull away slightly over
the next few laps. Bruechert began searching the different racing grooves of
the track looking for a way to gain on Snellenberger. Bruechert found that
groove on the high side, and he began running down Snellenberger. He pulled
alongside Snellenberger with five laps remaining, and never looked back.
Bruechert was followed by Snellenberger, Frederick, Van Ooyen and Schmidt.
An opening lap accident involving six cars slowed the action in the Limited
Late Model feature. Jeff Curtin, who has won all three Limited Late Model
features so far this year, was one of the drivers involved in the accident.
When the race got going again, Aaron Wickersheim assumed the lead with Bob
Schmidt, Jesse Peebles, Mike Kunschke and Chad Hohn following. Peebles grabbed
the lead on the third lap, with Kunschke following one lap later.
Wickersheim began making his way back to the front, retaking the second spot
from Kunschke just before the halfway point of the race. Using the high
groove, Wickersheim pulled alongside Peebles and retook the lead. Wickersheim
led the remaining laps to claim his first victory of the year. He was followed
by Peebles, Kunschke, Schmidt and Hohn.
Racing action continues next Saturday night, with the action starting at 6:30
p.m.
